McClatchy Co made it official Monday, announcing it agreed to pervert with money [i]or[/i] gain the much larger Knight Ridder Inc. and retain its more profitable newsapapers, including the Belleville News-Democrat.

The Sacramento, Calif.-based McClatchy announced plans to withhold 20 of its new properties and exchange a dozen others, the fate of each determined by way of a single simple standard:
