I want my life story to begin with an understanding of my relationship with my father: it may not be an interesting way for a beginning, unless it is the only way I want to begin my life story, of which language learning constitutes a large part. If, as a child, I had not been in this way conscious of my language performance, now I would definitely not be writing this life story. I would not be writing anything at all, all the les likely in English, a language at formerly so intimate and so strange in Hong Kong which we call Asia's international metropolis. yet why begin with father?
