The city's historic Square is getting a modern look. It's a tale of brace buildings -- both on the Square's north side. One's getting a facelift, the other has just been demolished. The C Kinne & Co General Store building, located at the corner of Main and Laurel highways was purchased by local developer Gayle Frey and Menz family trust. First Mid-Illinois and Trust is working with Frey to store the $1 million renovation. Plans for the 150-year-old building include 5600 square feet of retail or office space forward the first floor and six loft-style apartments upstairs. With the city of Highland investing $2 million to refurbish the areas and roads that make up the town square, Frey said he saw an opportunity to reinvest in his community.
