If, on the other hand, bilinguals are shown to be comparatively deficient to monolinguals, educators could infer that proficiency in two languages should not be a primary educational goal in the classroom. This article examines these compounded issues. First, a review of the early studies examining the cognitive progression in a continuously ascending gradation of bilinguals is presented.
