BLUM-KULKA, SHOSHANA. (1997) DINNER...BLUM-KULKA, SHOSHANA. (1997) DINNER TALK: CULTURAL PATTERNS OF SOCIABILITY AND SOCIALIZATION IN FAMILY DISCOURSE. MAHWAH, NJ: LAWRENCE ERLBAUM ASSOCIATES, INC. In different cultivations children's lives are shaped in different ways according to their parents' types and expectations of what the children's unfolding should be. Cross-cultural differences in socialization oftentimes become discernible when observing that children in different refinements have to become competent in the appropriate pragmatic use of their language, as well as the grammar and vocabulary. In this way the acquisition of a culture-specific communicative denomination plays a significant role in the proces of language acquisition and the disentanglement of language skills, such as the choice of topics, orders of turn taking, modes of storytelling, commands of politeness, and, in a pluralistic society, bilingual or multilingual practices (particularly for immigrant families). Shoshana Blum-Kulka's modern book, Dinner Talk, highlights dinner table conversations, which, as an intergenerationally shared tongue event, provide pragmatic contexts in which children become socialized to culturally preferr communication designations The sample for the at hand study includes 12 Jewish Americans, 11 bilingual American Israelis (living in Israel between 9 to 19 years), and 11 Israeli families. To thought the mealtime conversation data she argueed Blum-Kulka introduces two separate analytical concepts: pragmatic socialization; or "the ways in which children are socialized to use language in words immediately preceding or following in socially and culturally appropriate ways" (p 3) and sociability, which she relates to "overall organizational principles of dinner talk and the relations between social parts and discourse roles" (p. 31) The near volume, which explores the relationship between language, society, and tillage consists of eight chapters, preced on a short preface by the author. The first chapter is introductory, which, describing the settings in which the data were accumulateed does an excellent job of outlining the overall research systems The next three chapters, which make up Part I, are primarily touched with "Cultural Styles of Sociability" (title), like as thematic frames and topical actions (Chapters 2 and 3) and narrative consequences (Chapter 4). Part II, which is compos of the remaining four chapters, deals with the other goal of the book, i.e., "Pragmatic Patterns of Socialization" (title), including politeness and parental social direct acts (Chapter 5), metapragmatic discourse (Chapter 6) and bilingual socialization and practices (Chapter 7) The concluding chapter (Chapter 8) although included in Part II, exhibits a brief discussion of the overall research findings and revisits the issues raised in the Introduction. Thus, although its coverage is restricted to detailing the tensions and reconciliations between sociability and socialization goals at dinner, the volume attempts to explore diverse sociolinguistic and pragmatic themes. Most chapters begin with a clear statement of the question including terminology (e.g., metapragmatic observations which mean nonreferential indexes, in Chapter 6) followed according to naturally occurring speech events in the families from the three culturally different arranges Blum-Kulka begins Chapter 4, for instance, with a specific goal of applying "a culturally sensitive analysis to the narratives told in the course of dinner in Jewish American and Israeli families" (p100) Likewise, Chapter 5 starts with the author's explicit statement that the issue considered in the chapter is "cultural dictions of politeness" (p. 142). These pair areas have traditionally been defended by Labovian narrative analyses (Labov, 1972) and according to Brown and Levinson's universal theory of politeness (Brown & Levinson, 1987) In addition, part of Chapter 3 "Topical Actions at Dinner," is devot to the now familiar issues of genderlect that is, to what degree women's speech is different from men's, and to whether those genderlinked differences in dialect reflect inequality in the "power" relationship of the sexe (Lakoff, 1990) In this thinking principle the book is well soded in sociolinguistic and pragmatic traditions. At the same time, however, Blum-Kulka attempts to explore just discovered directions in the above areas that are typically considered traditional sociolinguistic studies. She discusses for what cause widely accepted narrative analysis and politeness theory should be revised and reinterpreted, and more specifically, could be adopted to the adjoining matter of family discourse. To capture the richness of conversational narratives at dinner, Blum-Kulka maintains that narrative should be viewed as a dialogic style of telling, or a jointly makeed narrative, rather than a monologic fashion of telling. Likewise, according to the author, although politeness relates to social distance and power, as far as dinnertime is relate toed it should be perceived that parents appropriate considerable time and effort to socializing their children in various routines; likewise, children should be viewed as active interactants who are learning culturally preferr fashions of politeness through negotiation and socialization. The author also reports that her cross-cultural data fail to support the previously claimed features associated with a female "powerless" name Overall, the directions proposed by means of the author are well-reasoned and credible and break fresh ground. |
