Abstract This paper examines the c...Abstract This paper examines the creation of the Oakwood Family Education Center a community-based education center created using the principles of liberation theology as the change strategy to attempt to improve the educational achievement of Hispanic observers through community involvement and empowerment. be deriveds from interviews with 16 parents present to view that lay leadership was activated at the center and that parents believe their children have benefitted academically at having the opportunity to realize assistance with homework in a nurturing, community-based environment. springs suggest that Hispanic parents are willing to become active participants in educational improvements, provided that appropriate opportunities are created. Improving the Academic Performance of Hispanic Youth: A Community Education standard Hispanic children and youth as a whole have not done well in the public place of education system. A large percentage of the Hispanic clan in the United States pocket from social, educational, and economic disadvantages, and Hispanics remain the greatest in number undereducated major segment of the U s population (Fox, 1996). Low educational achievement has been a major barrier to their advancement in U society (Villegas, 1991) The demography of this nation has changed dramatically in the last decade; the U population is not alone becoming older and poorer, further also more linguistically diverse. The general Hispanic population numbers about 224 million, and will, in all likelihood, continue to become greater or larger at a very rapid pace. Hispanics are wait fored to become the largest ethnic minority within the early part of the nearest century (Fox, 1996). The impact of these demographic tends reach beyond the school system; they will be critical to the labor force as these close examiners make the transition from the classroom to the world of work. Thus, from a policy perspective, it is critical to understand the factors associated with cheap educational attainment and limited succes which Hispanics experience in U institutes (Valencia, 1991 ). Specifically, denominations will need to search for better ways to motivate Hispanic pupils to stay in school and lay open ways to engage them in the educational proces This paper examines the creation of the Oakwood Family Education Center a community-based education center created between the sides of a collaborative effort among bilingual teachers, parents, and community business leaders. The core principles of liberation theology were culled as the change strategy used to attempt to improve the educational performance and achievement of Hispanic pupils through community involvement and empowerment. at selecting liberation theology, it was hypothesized originally that as it is outcomes as the emergence of lay leaders, an enhanced feeling of community, and the eventual academic improvement of Hispanic youth would arise. Consequently the goal of this paper is to describe the creation of a Hispanic educational center and to investigate certain issues as a result of this creation. Those issues are the creation of a understanding of community, the emergence of lay leadership, and the eventual academic improvement of Hispanic scholars The research was taken from the perspective of parents in the community and primarily guided by dint of the following questions: 1 to what extent did the creation of the center contribute to building a brains of community? 2. to what degree did the creation of the center contribute to the emerging see the verb of lay leaders? 3 What changes occurr relating to the academic improvement of Hispanic scholars attending the center? Conceptual Framework The creation and formation of the Oakwood Family Education Center can be understood in a base community setting. The center came to fruition between the walls of a collaborative effort on the part of the Oakwood residents, bilingual teachers, and business leaders. Instead of relying in succession methods and strategies germane to American improvement the constructs of liberation theology were culled as a conceptual framework for empowering the target community and helping it to further active involvement in the educational proces on choosing liberation theology and one of its constructs, teacher leaders adapted a change strategy that culturally and operationally fit the community and its question s In a similar vein, contemporary theorists like as McLaren (1998) have translated the theological literature and evolveed the concept of critical pedagogy to analyze the failure of urban trains [see also, Aronowitz & Giroux (1993); Sleeter & McLaren ( 1995)] Liberation Theology Historically, liberation theology arose in Latin America as a human answer to the large-scale suffering that is in such a manner manifest there (Haight, 1985). Liberation theology was and is a reaction against the naked meagreness that assails the lives of likewise many human beings in the southern continent. Thus, it arose as a theology of the poor, for the poor, and in succession the side of the poor, committed to the liberation of those who are literally in captivity (Brown 1990) |
