Compared with White teachers, a greater proportion of Black, Hispanic, and Asian/Pacific Islander teachers are beginning teachers. Factors so as immigration trends, unappealing classroom conditions, gentle salaries, recruitment procedures, and lack of mentoring have been intimateed as barriers to ethnic minority recruitment (Rong & Preissle, 1997; Stephens, 1999) Although "certain alternate ways into teaching-especially in urban areas-are attracting more teachers of color into the teaching profession" (Cochran-Smith et al., 2004 p 932) there is near evidence that many teachers of color leave the profession after 2 years (Lauer, 2001; Raymond, Fletcher, & Luque 2001) Beginning teachers were more likely to be hired according to schools with the highest percent of ELL and minority learners (National Center for Education Statistics, 2003) The majority of these teachs are in urban settings, where the quality of schooling has been set up to be strikingly different from the quality of suburban seminarys In urban schools, teachers are many times faced with negative teacher attitudes, whole-group prelection instruction, limited student involvement, and isolation from other professionals; suburban sect characteristics included use of authentic assessment, comfort with nobleman coaching strategies and feedback, and belief that children were active learners, and teachers were perceived as colleagues and decision makers (Harlin & Murray, 2001) Teachers of color may leave the profession because of cultural biases in proofs for novice teachers (Kemple, Murnane, Singer, & Willett, 1995) and poor working conditions in the inner cities, where teachers of color are more likely to teach (Branch, 2001)
