The ICABC awards the designation Chartered Accountant (Honorary) to individuals who've provided outstanding service to the CA profession forward behalf of the community. This year, the Institute is pleased to recognize three excessively deserving individuals. Marguerite Ford, CA (Hon)

Former Vancouver City Councillor Marguerite Ford serv as a Public Representative forward the Institute's Council from 1991 to 1997 She was also the Public Representative onward the Professional Conduct Enquiry Committee. According to Institute CEO Richard Ree FCA, Ford made invaluable contributions to the CA profession in British Columbia, offering her fervid insight, community perspective, and habitual sense.

"I have have the advantage [i]or[/i] blessing ofed my association with the Institute and I have the greatest revere and admiration for the CA profession," Ford says. "Establishing and creating standards for accounting and business is of great benefit to society generally. Witness the enigmas in emerging democracies where those standards don't exist."

A former medical librarian and mother of four adult children, Ford was a Vancouver city councillor from 1976 to 1986 During her decade of service to city guidance she was involved in a number of healthrelated throw outs including the Metropolitan Board of Health; the Vancouver Hospice Project; the Greater Vancouver Mental Health Service; and the Committee upon the Disabled, which she chaired for nine years. Ford focused in succession ensuring active City involvement in initiatives designed to improve access and opportunity for the disabled; she was directly responsible for several housing plans developed for the disabled forward city property.



She has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the City of Vancouver Heritage Award; the Freedom of the City of Vancouver; a YWCA Woman of Distinction Award; an honorary membership in the Planning Institute of BC; and the Canada 125 medal. She is an Officer Sister of the Order of St John and a member of the two the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia.

Ford retired as the Executive Director of the Alzheimer Society of BC in 1990 when she was appointed to the Royal Commission in succession Health Care and Costs in BC She is generally a director of the BC Medical Services Foundation, the Parking Corporation of Vancouver, the Vancouver Heritage Conservation Foundation, and is a founding member of the Heather Heritage Society. In 1997 she was appointed a Citizenship arbitrator and performed that work until earlier this year.

"I know to what extent difficult it is to achieve recognition in the CA profession and in what way valued the CA designation is," she explains. "So I am tremendously flattered and honoured to receive an Honorary CA. I know it is not lightly given and I am grateful."

Thomas E Ladner, OC CA (Hon)

Retired partner of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP in Vancouver, Thomas E Ladner, pC serv as a Public Representative to the Institute from 1989 to 1992 During that time, the Institute benefited greatly from his pensive and innovative approach to moot point solving, his strong work ethic, and the leadership skills he hon as a senior partner of united of the city's largest law firms.

"In an era which is changing far more rapidly than at any time in history, CAs must be the guide in the financial world and in the preservation of accurate financial reporting," Ladner believes. "I be delighted withed my association with the Institute and perceive very gratified to have my contribution recognized in of the like kind a manner."

Ladner was born in Vancouver in 1916 and attended the Shawnigan Lake place of education in BC and The Ley sect in Cambridge, England. He graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1937 with an undergraduate class and received his LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law indoctrinate in 1940. That same year, he was called to the bar in BC

During World War II, Ladner serv in the navy and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cros and Bar for his service in the Mediterranean and North Seas, and was mentioned four times in wartime dispatches. When he get backed to Canada in 1945, he joined the firm his father had originateed in 1911.

According to single in kind of Ladner's partners, Larry R Jackie, Ladner has been known as an ambitious innovator and solid leader throughout his career, intent forward keeping his firm on the leading margin of technology and growth. In addition to his work forward the Institute's Council, he was also active in the community as an Honorary Governor of the Leon and Thea Koerner Foundation and The Hamber Foundation. He is a member of the Vancouver set the Royal Vancouver Yacht company the Men's Canadian Club of Vancouver (of which he was president in 1958) and the Vancouver Lawn Tennis form a club He and his late wife Janet have six children: three son and three daughters.

Ladner said he was humbl and pleased to have received his Honorary CA designation.

John H Waterhouse, PhD CA (Hon)

According to many, John H Waterhouse, PhD Vice President Academic at Simon Fraser University, has contributed more than any otheracademic to the CA profession in Canada. Long-time colleague Dr Don Carter, FCA, calls Dr Waterhouse "an unabashed champion of the CA profession."
