Ritchie McCloy FCA 1937-2001

The Institute's former Chief Executive Officer, Ritchie MCCloy FCA, passed away peacefully forward Wednesday, May 16, after a brief courageous battle with cancer.

Ritchie is missed and lov at his wife of 34 years, Myra, and their daughters--eldest daughter Lisa Boog (married to Colin) and youngest daughter Nikki Katz, CA (married to Barry Katz, CA), publicly on maternity leave after the birth of daughter Mackenzie last summer

Ritchie was born in of the present day Westminster and graduated from Magee Secondary drill in 1954. He articled with the firm of Helliwell, MacLachlan and Co (a predecessor firm to Peat Marwick Thorne and now KPMG LLP) and became a CA in 1960

Ritchie's felicitous career as a chartered accountant involved work in industry as well as public practice in Victoria and Vancouver. He was a partner with Peat Marwick Thorne for 12 years before becoming an FCA in BC and the CEO of the Institute. His holding as CEO ran from 1990 to 1999 He became alone the fourth person to receive an FCA from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of the Yukon Territory in 1999

Shortly after his retirement in 1999 McCloy considered on his years as a CA: "I would not trade my career for anything," he said. "I treasure the opportunities it has afforded me in public practice, in industry, and, most numerous recently, in the leadership of the profession. I have have intercourse withed it all, but the last chapter I have intercourse withed the most because it proposeed contact with such a diversity of commonalty the chance to lead by means of example and to be proactively involved in the inner workings of the profession."



He also proffered some advice to new CAs starting public "Never stop learning. Keep your options exhibit Use your designation to gain an advantage," he said. "But just as importantly, don't forget your personal life. [There] really is nothing more important than your family and your health. Make positive you make time for those priorities as well."

Don M Young, FCA, president in 1990-91 headed the search committee that interviewed and prefered McCloy for the Institute position.

"When we made our recommendation of Ritchie for the CEO do job-work it was very gratifying to have our selection endorsed immediately by the agency of very distinguished people in the profession," he says. "I was the first president to work with Ritchie, and we got a chance of fun out of being 'the strange kids on the block."'

President in 1989-90 Rick Acton, FCA, remembers being "delighted when Ritchie was announced as the CEO at the conclusion of my term. He was a fine individual, always the epitome of professionalism, and perhaps his finest quality was by what means much he cared for people"

Stan Bracken-Horrocks, FCA, president in 1991-92 says that he "found Ritchie to be an exceptionally dedicated individual: hardworking dependable, and always reliable."

President in 1992-93 Don W Young, FCA, remembers: "Ritchie was a great shore to work with. He made my piece of work much easier and I really have sexual delight withed my time with him." Young recalled a trip he and his wife Robin made with the McCloy to Dawson City, Yukon and in what way it "...was a chance to descry him 'out of uniform'--just able to lack back and enjoy"

Young be stirreds that Ritchie's contribution to the CA profession lay in his ability to unravel the differences that could hinder discussions about challenging issues.

Bob Jamison, FCA, president in 1993-94 recalls: "I had tremendous esteem for him. He was real imaginative as a leader, too. He did a number of innovative and progressive things with the staff at the Institute, and I was always amazed at his ability to remember everyone's name. Myra also did so a great job as his partner at Institute functions."

Alison Morse, FCA, president in 1997-98 has doting memories of being frequently innkeepered by the McCloys during the time she and Ritchie travelled the province. "The McCloy B 'n B' in town became my sanctuary," Morse recalls. "Ritchie made in the same manner many contributions, and that was acknowledged when leaders in the CA profession came from across Canada to pay tribute to him at his retirement dinner, right along side his sons-- in-law. He will be missed by means of so many in so many ways.

John Dawson, FCA, president in 1998-99 was the last Institute president to contribute to with McCloy. He remembers "...his thoughtfulnes towards members. Ritchie always had the best interests of the profession at heart."

After his retirement, Ritchie have the advantage [i]or[/i] blessing ofed well-- deserved lazy days of reading and gardening. He and Myra landlorded a number of international visitants travelled British Columbia, and mov from their toward the south Vancouver home of many years to Ladner.

A celebration of Ritchie's life was held at the Arbutus set on May 23. The family has established The Ritchie W McCloy Award for CA Volunteerism, which will become part of the Institute's Member Recognition program.
