PRESIDENT'S NOTES

"Here I am, in early July sitting in my office writing my first file as president. As I contemplate Council's many achievements from one side of to the other the four years that I've been a member, and each president's leadership,

I miracle whether I will measure up to the honour you've given me according to granting me leadership of our Institute athwart the next year.

In particular, I'd like to thank my predecessors shady Hayes, FCA, and Chuck Chandler, FCA, for providing the foundation with which our Institute can stir forward. Woody started our recently made known governance process, and, together with our CEO Richard Ree FCA, overhauled Institute operations. tap or pat implemented the new governance proces and in the year he was president, provided more time and opportunity for Council to focus forward the needs of members-particularly with regard to the attractiveness of the profession and the CA designation.

The Attractiveness Issue

Education is first note of the scale to the attractiveness issue, and I'm pleased to report that after sum of two units years of intense negotiation across the land national consensus has been reached. The arise is totally consistent with education requirements contemplated by means of the "Vision CA" and the CA exercise of Business. In 2003, there will be a satiated competency-based exam, with open work access, and core competencies measured by the agency of the new UE (see page 17) These core competencies will be enhanced by the agency of additional studies in key areas of interest to pupils prior to certification. It's incumbent on the subject of us all as members and prospective employer of close examiners and CAs to understand this strange program. Please take the time to review the available information forward our website at WWW.ica.bc.ca and upon the new CAS$ website at WWW.Casb.com (see page 18 of this issue for more details).

Council Retreat

By the time you read this row Council will already have been hard at work attending to issues critical to BC members. At a two-day retreat in July Council focused upon its "ends" (Council terminology for the accrues important to its members). In particular, Council addressed means of enhancing the attractiveness of the profession to potential members, and of maintaining public confidence in the CA designation. In later files I'll discuss the results of Council deliberations.

Throughout the upcoming President's Tour, I plan to come by your views on these and other issues facing our members, as well as suggestions in succession how to address them.

National recents

On the national impudence this year, you should look for to hear more about the novel Global designation. The AICPA will be conducting a member promised in the fall, and if the proposal goe ahead, we anticipate that a proces to determine Canada's participation will come next shortly thereafter. Information on the credential is now available in succession a special Global Credential section of the CICA website at www.cica.ca.

Provincial recents

With a new BC dominion we see an opportunity to act upon forward with changes to our Act, changes we've been seeking for many years. First VP Robin Elliott, FCA, is heading up a task force to deal with this issue, and Council will actively continue the various initiatives. Another top priority is to procure liability reform legislation in place in BCcurrently the rules of Canada, Alberta, Quebec, Ontario, and Saskatchewan have in the same state or condition legislation in place.

Also in succession the provincial front, CA members Gordon Bearfoot (Chair), Hugh Gordon, ICABC's secondary VP John Cowperthwaite, and Tim Duholke serv in succession the Financial Review Commission that was established by the agency of the new government to review the province's finances. This, following in succession the heels of the Enn bag Process Review Panel Report forward accountability (which led to the batch Transparency and Accountability Act), point outs how much government appreciates the wisdom and advice of our members. (The Panel was chaired through Past President, Doug Enns, FCA, and supported by way of Past President Alison More, FCA, and Hugh Gordon, FCA.)

Celebrating the Profession

* Immediately after our Annual General Meeting forward June 26, we held single first Member Recognition Dinner (for a wrap-up, diocese page 19). Suffice it to say, the incident was truly memorable; it brought hearthstone to me what a great profession I'm a part of and just in what way much our members, as exemplified at those recognized at the occurrence contribute to the society we live in.

In that same regard, I'd like to thank returning Council members, as well as retiring members, Mark Dickie, CA, and Paul Grehan, CA, and of course common of our

* public representatives, Leslie Cliff, for their outstanding contributions to Council. I'd also like to welcome Amed Naqvi, CA, and our modern public representative, Susan Burns to their first metes of Council.

I anticipate forward to meeting with as many of you as possible during the upcoming President's Tour. In the meantime, please email your annotations to me at president@ica.bc.ca.
