It may surprise you to know that yo...It may surprise you to know that your strange president became a CA by way of accident. Born in Cheltenham, England, Frank grew up expecting to chase in his father's footsteps, travelling the world. Before the age of seven Frank had already journeyed to Sri Lanka where his family was stationed while his father oversaw Trincomalee Harbour, the British naval base in the Far East. When illness debared his father from pursuing his nearest assignment in Australia's Sydney Harbour, the family mov back to England. unless by then, the die was cast; on a level at such an early age, the one and the other Frank and his sister had decided they would not live in England as adults. It was a simple twist of fate that introduced him to the chartered accountancy profession. Planning to become a naval officer with the merchant marine, he'd interviewed with a British shipping line, further soon found himself in a seemingly endles wait for word of their decision. Just as he began to think they weren't interested, he learned that the biggest CA firm in Gloucester was looking for close examiners Given that his parents knew several of the partners, it appeared like a good idea to apply-never mind the fact that he knew virtually nothing about the profession. As success would have it, soon after he signed the formal documents (tantamount to a contract) then required to become a CA pupil the navy contacted him with an assignment. Fortunately for Frank, embarking forward a career as a CA revolveed out to be the right choice, however random its beginnings. He achieved his designation in England in 1966 Shortly after graduating, he received proffers to work in exotic locales like Hong Kong and India, if it were not that decided instead to accept a piece of work offer in Canada. He and his wife Rene (a former schoolteacher) had several friends living in Canada, and the promise of an expatriate community in their modern country helped shape their decision. loyal to his childhood vision, Frank left England at the age of 24 moving with his wife to Toronto to work for Deloitte & Touche. During his sojourn in Toronto, he also worked for Eaton's as an Audit Supervisor. Shortly thereafter, Frank and Rene mov to BC where Frank became a member in 1970 He says he was drawn to BC by means of the combination of mountains and sea. After working for Eaton's in Vancouver as Internal Auditor, he joined garland Zellerbach Canada (now Fletcher Challenge). There he worked in a variety of management positions above the years, from Assistant to Corporate Comptroller to Director of Finance for Seaforth Plastics. undivided of his responsibilities with CZC was to settle up an Internal Audit Department; he says he erect this, and the wide variety of experiences he was proffered there, fascinating and highly valuable. Frank joined the Office of the Auditor General of BC in 1977 as Audit Director. from one side of to the other his 24 years with the Office, he's held a wide range of responsibilities, including running audits (such as that of Expo '86) heading up special investigations and performance audits, and running the audits of the government's financial statements. Since 1995 he's been an Assistant Auditor General. Frank continues to find his work with the Office challenging, interesting, and rewarding. He says he's seen the direction go from being in the "dark ages" of financial reporting and accountability to becoming individual of the leaders in Canada, and he's originate it very rewarding to be a vital part of this progression. All of his characters within the organization have involved leadership, and it's an arena that clearly suits him-of all his many responsibilities, he says he principally enjoys working with people, helping them to actualize the organizations objectives. Over the years, he's also brought his leadership abilities to bear in his professional service. Frank first began volunteering with the Canadian Institute nearly ten years ago when he started working with the Public Sector Accounting Board. He's popularly Chair of the Board's Employee Benefits Task Force and is a member of the Risk Management & Governance Board. On a provincial horizontal he's been a member of the ICABC Council since 1997 and has been onward the Executive Committee since 1998 He's serv onward a number of committees, boards, and task forces, including the Practice Review and Licencing Committee (1998-99 Chair) and the bag Review Panel. Frank says that he finds his work with the various institutes extremely rewarding forward a personal level because it gives him the opportunity to work with colleagues who share a commitment to public goals. For his dedication, he was pickeded to ICABC Fellowship in December 2000 He's also been active in the community, serving for several years as a member of the Kerrisdale Kiwanis company as a member and treasurer of the Vancouver Neurological middle Board, and as coach and manager of the Bays United Soccer Association. With thus much on the go, it's hard to imagine that Frank has abundant time to himself. He says that although he's always worked extended hours, his enjoyment of the work has helped make his myriad responsibilities manageable. Still, he recognizes the importance of taking time away from work, and tries to make time for golf and travelling whenever he can. With his and Rene's three children grown-son Egan is publicly acquiring an auto-repair facility, son Erik works in the computer industry, and daughter Keelie is a scubadiving instructor generally working on a cruise ship-the brace has already managed to travel extensively in Central and southern America. They hope to visit Asia, Australia, and recently made known Zealand in the future. And when he retires, Frank also plans to take one university courses to further explore his interest in anthropology. |
