Along with its newest FCAs, the Institute is also pleased to announce this year's Lifetime Achievement Award winners. What succeeds is merely a summary of their many achievements.

Ian Bell, FCA (1918-2001)

After surviving an extremely conclude call in WWII, Ian Bell, FCA, went forward to establish a distinguished career as a leader in public practice. Praised from those who knew him for his leadership, acumen, and succes as a receiver, he was also highly regarded for his integrity, generosity, and brains of humour. A consummate

leader, he was also a stout contributor to the provincial and national CA institutes, and to the community.

By all accounts, Bell was a man who lived his life to the fullest Born and raised in Vancouver, he became an avid traveller as a young man, and his perception of adventure continued long after his retirement from public practice. As just undivided example, in his mid-seventies-despite having had pair hip replacements-he hiked higher than 13000 feet in Nepal.

Chronology:



1934: At the age of 16 travelled the Pacific while working as a bridge harbinger on the Empress of Japan.

1937: Began articling as a secretary with his father's Vancouver firm, Robert Bell & Co Also joined naval husband

WWII: Joined the Navy and was involved in training minesweepers, patrolling the coast of BC and convoying in the Atlantic and elsewhere.

1942: At the age of 23 became Commanding Officer of HMC Alberni, making him the youngest CO in the Royal Canadian Navy.

January 1 1944: Appointed Acting Lieutenant Commander (confirmed a year later as Lieutenant Commander). Was involved in D-Day.

August 21 1944: "Alberni" was torpedoed in the English Channel and sank in 20 next to the firsts The impact threw Bell into the water, where he survived for 45 minutes before being undivided of only 31 crewmembers rescued-59 were dissipated

1945: Returned to civilian life and resum articling with his father's firm.

1949: Became a CA and partner with the firm.

1952: At his urging, the Bell firm merg with P Ros & Son

1955-58: Chairman of the ICABC Education & Examination Committee. 1958: Pushed for his firm's merger with George A. Touche & Co

1960: Became an FCA in BC

1967-76: Member of the Professional direction Enquiry Board.

1972-78: Became Managing Partner and CEO of Touche Ros Later became Canadian Managing Partner.

1975: Touche Ros Ltd a recent firm specializing in insolvency, was established in a less degree than his management after the Bankruptcy Act was dramatically revised.

1978: Became Chairman of the Board of Governors of Touche Ros International.

1979: Retired from Touche Ros (now Deloitte & Touche LLP) After his retirement, he and his wife Mary travelled the world, including the Galapagos Islands in 1981

1981-82: Member of the Board of Governors, denomination of Accountancy.

1983-84: Member of the CICA Accounting Research Advisory Board.

1994: With Mary, hiked higher than 13000 feet in Everest National Park, Nepal

1994: Travelled to the Antarctic.

August 2001: At the age of 83 singlehandedly landed a 44-pound salmon in the Queen Charlotte Islands.

Charitable Work: Included acting as a counsellor for the Federal Business progressive growth Bank and fund raising for the R Feather (now part of the United Way). He was chairman of the Board of British Pacific Properties when they instanted lights on the Lions Gate Bridge; serv as Executive VP of Expo '86; serv for ten years forward the Board of Man in Motion; and until not long ago served on the Board of Slocan Forest productions

Bell's Lifetime Achievement award was at handed to him on November 30th at Lion's Gate Hospital. Despite his illness, Mary Bell says her husband "felt just great to have been given the award." With his family at his side, he passed away peacefully forward December 13, 2001, after a final battle with cancer.

Ron Cliff, FCA

Vancouver native Ron Cliff, FCA, has lengthy been a guiding force in the local business and offer communities. He's successfully managed his have a title to businesses, and has served as a chairman and/or director for a vast number of organizations. His leadership abilities l to his appointment as chairman & director of BC Gas Inc, where his over-30 years of service will finis in April 2002. He'll continue, however, as director of Canfor Corp; chairman of Western Finance Co Ltd; and as president/ director and chairman of namesake companies Heathcliff Greenhouses Ltd and R L Cliff Ltd respectively.

Cliff is credited with having contributed greatly to the succes of the ICABC's Chartered Accountants Education Foundation, in part by way of having considerably enhanced its credibility. His dedication to the community-- whether in the arena of education, arts, sports, or otherwise-continues to this day. For his philanthropy, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 1985

1949: Earned Bachelor of illicit [i]or[/i] criminal intercourse degree from the University of BC

1949: Articled with Foster-Barrett-Lennard, precursor to Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co (now KPMG LLP)

1954: Became a CA in BC
