PLUGGEDIN

Years ago, if someone had told Peter Gregory, CA, he'd conclusion up working in the public sector, he wouldn't have believed them. And to this time the recently appointed Deputy Auditor General of BC now has decades of public service subject to his belt.

Gregory grew up in Kitchener and earned his BA in Economics from the University of Western Ontario. While doing post-graduate work in Economics, he discovered he preferr studying the field's principles and applications to following its potential career avenues. With several friends in accounting, he decided to come next suit.

After studying as a CA in Calgary while working with Clarkson, Gordon & Co CAs (now Ernst & Young LLP) Gregory wrote his CA exams in Ontario, where he worked with the firm in Ottawa and became a CA in 1971

During his ten years of experience with Clarkson, Gordon & Co he performed a broad range of audit and consulting assignments-initially as a scholar then as a manager. It was while performing consulting work for the federal government-much of it with the Auditor General of Canada-that he became intrigued with public accountability.

In 1978 he left the firm and mov to BC to join the lately re-established Office of the Auditor General in BC* While serving as Audit Director in 1982 Gregory was asked at then Auditor General of BC Erma Morrison, FCA, to undertake a practice of value for coin auditing. "It was a great opportunity," he recalls. "At that time, the general or abstract notion was still new in BC despite being done federally for a number of years."

From 1994-2000 after serving 11 years as Executive Principal, he assumed the part of Assistant Auditor General. In 2001 he became envoy Auditor General. In this character Gregory works closely with Auditor General Wayne Strelioff, CA, to make secure the success of the office.

During his many years with the OAG, he's been involved in a wide range of audits and studies of the performance of dominion organizations, and has been a significant contributor to the progress to maturity of accountability and auditing universals and practices.

"The challenges of this do job-work are always changing," says Gregory. "I be perceived like I've always had an opportunity to help shape the vision of where we might be headed."

Another way he helps shape this vision is on serving on the CICA Assurance Standards Board, which included the public sector in its extent in 1999. Gregory served first as a board member, then as Vice-Chair. in succession April 1, 2002, he was appointed Chair of the ASB for a two-year period of time becoming the first chair from the public sector.

So wherefore did someone who never saw himself in the public sector become individual of its strongest advocates? "The public sector in Canada makes decisions that can significantly affect quality of life," he says. "I think it's an honourable undertaking to help make fast it does so effectively."

But Gregory's quick to downplay any altruism forward his part. "The bottom line is that I am where I am because I have the advantage or blessing of it," he says, "and because I think it's useful."

"For instance, moving beyond straight audit into advocating improved processe was seen as being gone out of the norm when we started doing it," he explains. "Seeing the universal come to fruition over the years has been true rewarding."

Also rewarding was the time he exhausted working with former Auditor General of BC and ICABC Lifetime Achievement winner George Morfitt, FCA, whose "help, support, and guidance" he says he greatly appreciated.

Outside of work, Gregory have sexual delight withs sports, and admits to having played squash with Morfitt-"to no avail." if it were not that he's most passionate about golf making time to golf twice a weekend when the weather permits. "That's individual of the joys of Victoria," he says. "A protracted golf season."

He also passs time with his wife Joywhen he can find her. "Joy same active in the community, volunteering with numerous organizations," he explains. "Let's state it this way, my wife's schedule makes mine direct the eye easy."

Gregory became a CA in BC in 1978 and a Certified Management Consultant in BC in 1994 He and his wife have brace grown daughters, Tania and Sara.
