I trustful longing I've learned from his steadfast approach. I am fortunate to have a powerful management team led by CEO Richard Ree FCA, and an experienced Council to help guide my way this year. I am also pleased to say that all of last year's Council members have reverted and I am glad to welcome Dan Little, CA, to his first denomination Both Council and management have worked hard to initiate and implement to a high degree positive changes over the past small in number years, and events in the last scarcely any months have accelerated activity in a number of areas. Nationally A greater spirit of cooperation has unfolded between the provinces. There are 68000 members of the Canadian Institute, and we intend to work in plot to enhance the CA brand. (Congratulations to Barbara Simpson, CA, who's been appointeded to the CICA Council.) The profession commonly has the challenge of speeding up the changes that were already subordinate to review. These include a review and plan for Public Oversight and reviews of Independence issues. By the time this article is published, we look for to introduce a Public Oversight transaction which is currently being lay opened in conjunction with securities and other regulators across the geographical division (including the BC Securities Commission). Further details about the deed and the method of its implementation will be reviewed more extensively in the nearest few months. Public Oversight will also be united of our primary focus areas as we qualified with members. Provincially We have actively pursu the issue of liability reform and have been advised that Limited Liability Partnerships may be forward the legislative agenda for 2003 This change is lengthy overdue in BC, which is the same of the last jurisdictions in North America to implement the legislation. We are also requesting changes to the Accountants (Chartered) Act. Our members are well delineateed on legislative review committees. The ICABC's First VP John Cowperthwaite, CA, is chair of the BC guidance Accounting Policy Advisory Committee and was previously a member of the BC Fiscal Review Panel. Last year we told you about the Institute's objective to enhance the attractiveness of the profession. This continues to be a high priority. As always, our primary responsibility is to support members in their chosen profession. one time again, the goals to achieve this involve: * upholding the integrity of the CA profession; * providing enough well trained students; * supporting members in their pursuit to be business advisors and assurance providers of choice; * and ensuring that buyer of our services recognize the skills and services of CAs. Council retreat By the time you have read this file your Council will have finished an exhaustive two-day session examining the issues that affect our members. I will detail Council's proposals in following columns. All in all, this will be an exciting year for the profession. Ye we do have challenges, on the other hand I believe we have the potency and integrity to meet them. I gaze forward to meeting with many of you during our various discussion forums and during the province-wide President's Tour. In the meantime, I welcome your explanations and suggestions. Please feel exempt to contact me by email at president@ica.bc.ca. I was really pleased to participate in the Member Recognition Dinner held upon June 12th, following our Annual General Meeting. Seeing by what means much our members contribute to the community and to the profession made me self-conscious to be a CA. Past President thrust Chandler, FCA, chaired the Member Recognition Committee. Thanks to him and to our other tenders And many thanks to ICABC's Manager, Executive Office Karen Pakulak for organizing the auspicious event. On page 21 you'll find more photos from the issue I hope to see steady more of you at the end next year! BY ROBIN A.
