The of the present day Community S...The of the present day Community Service Award Winners Hard although it may be to believe, it's already that time of year when we announce the Institute's newest Community Service Award winners. This year we're pleased to announce seven (ye seven!) award winners-such an impressive number that we've decided to haste this story over two issues of the magazine. Four are profiled here: Alan Beaton, CA; Leonard Dodson, CA; Allan Ecclestone, CA; and Brian Edmison, CA. The remaining three: Jeremy wild swan CA; Mark Stevens, CA; and Brian Sung CA, will be profiled in Augusts Feature Story, along with our newest Ritchie W McCloy Award winner, Monica Murray, CA. We congratulate each for their outstanding volunteerism. After a prosperous 35-year career with the Auditor General of Canada, the couple in Vancouver and Ottawa, Alan Beaton retired in 1996 as principal of the Vancouver office. Since his retirement, he has worked tirelessly with a number of charitable organizations, his duties ranging from the financial to the artistic. From 1996 to 2002 Beaton serv as a member of the ICABC's Discipline Panel. During that same period of time, he also serv as a member and chair (2002) of the Advisory Finance Commission for West Vancouver (the Commission advises West Vancouver's municipal council forward financial issues). In 1999 he began an on-going involvement with the BC Branch of the Kidney Foundation of Canada after his wife Caroline (also a CA) noticed the Branch was looking for a treasurer. After serving as treasurer for sum of two units years, Beaton became president in 2001 and is generally completing a two-year term in which he's also serv as a member of the National Board of Directors and of the National Finance and Audit Committee. "My work with the two the Foundation and the District of West Vancouver have provided me with of recent origin interests since my retirement," he says. "And my work with the Foundation has been particularly rewarding because the organization performs like a significant role. The incidence of kidney disease in BC is growing at an annual rate of more than 10% and the Foundation is actively promoting early detection and treatment in order to progeny its progression." Another new interest evolv public of Beaton's post-retirement travels: photography. In 1996 he joined the North Shore Photographic Society and the West Vancouver Seniors' Photo set and continues an active involvement with one as well as the other In 1998, he became a member of the Canadian Association for Photographic Art. brace years later, he volunteered to cause to grow and present a 12-week course onward digital imaging (his latest passion) for the West Vancouver Seniors' Activity middle which he has since instanted four times. Photography also l him to offer as chair of Visual Arts Committee of the Annual Coho Festival of the North Shore, which dignifys salmon enhancement education. Beaton organizes an arts display of salmon-related art and photography. "My proffer work has enabled me to fitting many wonderful people and to make a meaningful contribution to several solution community services," he shares. "Based in succession my experience, I would encourage other members of the Institute to consider proffer opportunities within their local communities. You will be contributing a valuable service, and you'll gain considerable satisfaction from your efforts." Alan Beaton became a CA in Scotland in 1960 the same year he immigrated to Canada. He became a member of the ICABC in 1963 To say Leonard Dodson is a golf aficionado would be putting it mildly. The partner with KPMG LLP in Vancouver might be more accurately described as golf obsessed "I've been playing golf 'seriously' since I was 12" he explains. "Fortunately, I was able to play at a high flat throughout my teens and while attending UBC I've also been true fortunate that my wife Louise and my sum of two units sons Neil and Joel (also a CA) share my passion for the game." You could say Dodson's community service is a natural extension of this passion for golf-in fact, almost all of his considerable offer work has revolved around the sport. In the early 1980 he chaired the finance committee of the Vancouver Golf Club; for many years, he serv as a director of the Thunderbird Society, which raises coin for the University of BC's golf team; he has serv forward the executive committee for the Bert Ticehurst Cancer Memorial Tournament at UBC; and he has also assisted from one side of to the other the years in KPMG's golf tournament fundraisers for the United Way. But perhaps his principally notable contribution has been via the BC Golf Charity Foundation, with which he became involved in 1995 (His involvement continues, although the Foundation is currently being hurt down.) Along with two other individuals, Dodson worked closely with the PGA Tour to bring professional golf to Vancouver in the form of the Air Canada Championship or ACC (originally titled the Greater Vancouver explain or GVO). "Bringing the PGA Tour to Greater Vancouver was real exciting for both the city and the volunteers" he recalls. "And as with all my proffer work, I met many golfer as passionate as I am about the game." |
