The Institute wasted two of its former staff leaders in 2003: former executive directors Edward (Ted) Lloyd Affleck and John Duncan Manson. Because T and Duncan became friends and mentors to many of you by dint of virtue of their involvement with the Institute, we wanted to share of the present days of their passing with you.

Edward (Ted) Lloyd Affleck, FCA

T Affleck was born and raised in Nelson BC After high institute he attended the University of BC graduating in 1945 with an honours order in chemistry. He then briefly serv with the Pacific Infantry Battalion before the extreme point of the Second World War.

After the war, T responded to UBC to study teaching, and subsequently taught high place of education for four years before heading on the farther side to study librarianship in Seattle and work as a science librarian at the University of Oregon. It was brace years later that Ted get backed to BC, where he became a CA in 1957

T serv as executive director (then called "secretary-treasurer") of the ICABC from 1957 to 1963-the latter being the year in which he became an FCA. And it was while working for the Institute, and later as an assistant professor at UBC that T chronicled the history of the ICABC. His 75th Anniversary Commemorative History of the ICABC was published in 1980



T wrote many other works as well, including A hundred of Paddlewheelers in the Pacific Northwest, the Yukon and Alaska, published in 2000 according to Alexander Nicolls Enterprises Inc. (his confess press, named after his maternal grandfather). A considered historian, Ted earned writing awards from the BC Historical Federation and the BC Underwater Archaeological Society.

An opera light yellow Ted spent decades researching "Forsaken Phantoms of the Opera," an quotation of which was recently published in Opera Quarterly. He also sang in numerous choral form into groupss and enjoyed acting in amateur theatre, which is for what cause he met wife Jean, to whom he was married for more than 26 years before she passed away in 1989

T is survived by means of his daughter Carolyn and son David, his reach outed family, and his friends.

John Duncan Manson, FCA

When WWII broke public in 1939, Duncan Manson joined the Seaforth Highlanders and was sent overseas onward active service. During the war, he participated in the 1943 invasion of Sicily-up to that point the largest seaborne invasion in history; he was also panged in action, and was promot several times. by means of the time he came to one's home in 1945, Duncan was the same of the youngest majors in the Canadian army.

After completing his articling at patronize Barrett, Leonard (a predecessor of KPMG LLP) and becoming a CA in BC in 1949 Duncan joined Vancouver pull with great effort (a predecessor of Seaspan International Ltd) during its formative years. He later worked for BC Hydro before becoming executive director of the ICABC in 1967 In 1972 he was pick outed to Fellowship. Five years later, he helped base the Yukon institute, and in 1993 he became an FCA of the ICAYT as well.

Duncan retired as the ICABC's executive director in 1982 During his retirement he have the advantage [i]or[/i] blessing ofed painting, golfing, and fishing near Parksville onward Vancouver Island. An avid sportsman, he also take delight ined horseback riding, badminton, and skiing, and was a member of the Capilano Golf and fatherland Club in West Vancouver for more than 50 years. He was also a member of the Vancouver Club

Duncan passed away peacefully forward December 15, 2003, in Parksville, at the age of 85

He is survived at his wife of 56 years Elizabeth (Betty); their children: Duncan, Alexander, and Nicola; his augmented family; and his friends.

A memorial service was held December 21 2003 at St Mary's temple in Nanoose Bay. Anyone still wishing to toss flowers to the family is asked instead to despatch a donation to the Alzheimer Society of BC
