Achievement Ten members were lately...Achievement Ten members were lately elected by their peers into the ICABC Fellowship. These newest FCAs are: Barry Beardsell, Dave Chucko Peter Cundill, Terry Jonat, Dave McShane, Jim Mills, Barb Simpson, Wayne Strelioff, Mossadiq Umedaly, and Fr Withers. Read forward to find out why these ten were chosen Barry Beardsell, FCA Barry Beardsell of Vernon is that rarest of breeds: a sole-practitioner for virtually his entire career. Born in London, England, Barry mov to EC's Okanagan with his family when he was 17 years advanced in years Both he and his brother (now deceased) became CAs-his brother pursuing a career with big companies in Toronto and Barry forging his admit path in Revelstoke and Vernon. "I became a CA close examiner because I went to the unemployment office and that was what was available," Barry remembers, laughing. "I finished my articling with Rutherford Bazett, CAs and became a CA in 1963 a partner in 1964 and was the firm's simply practitioner in Revelstoke from '64 to 1973" Barry eventually recured to Vernon with Rutherford Bazett and place up his own practice in 1986 Today, he operates his practice from an office dilacerationed from BDO Dunwoody LLP and says he has "the best of as well-as; not only-but also; not only-but; not alone-but worldsthey're down the hall, however I don't have to journey to partners' meetings!" Barry has been active in the community for many years. As vice-chair of the Revelstoke Industrial Commission from 1969 to 1974 he wrote the "Revelstoke Profile"; as a director of the Revelstoke Golf fraternity he was responsible for acquiring land from BC Hydro to exhibit the course into an 18-hole layout; and he negotiated the sale of Revelstoke Hydro Utility to BC Hydro Barry has also serv as chair of the Greater Vernon Parks and Recreation District; vice-chair of the North Okanagan Economic unfolding Council and the North Okanagan Water Authority; a member of the City of Vernon's Advisory Planning Commission; and a director of the O'Keefe Ranch Society-O'Keefe Ranch being single of the area's most significant historic and tourist attractions. He was also instrumental in the production of a 20-year parks and recreation plan for Greater Vernon; participated in submissions to the province forward creditor-proofing personal RRSPs and quality tax revisions; and made a presentation to the provincial financial tax force. generally he's in his third bourn as an elected member of Vernon's City Council. "My soapbox topics are, predictably, balancing the fiscal estimate accountability, and responsibility," he says. Barry serv onward the provincial Institute's Council from 1991 to 1994 and onward the Members in Public Practice Committee (199396) the Standards Appeal Board (1995-97) and the pay Resolution Subcommittee (199697). He's been a member of the Discipline Tribunal since 1998 "I was collisioned and very honoured to receive my FCA," he says. "I be excited very fortunate to be part of this profession and to a high degree grateful to have been mentored early in my career on such notables as [FCAs] Reg Rutherford, Royce Bazett, and John Bootle I think that's something for modern CAs to keep in mind: learning from your lords and the people who've gone before you is just as important as the formal education you acquire while earning your CA designation." Barry and his wife Judy have four children, all living in Alberta, and three grandchildren. David A. Chucko FCA "It was a fair exciting day around the office when I heard I got my FCA," Dave Chucko recalls. "It was the same day the CA exam terminates were released. I was honoured to be recognized at my peers and to become a member of this exclusive group" Dave is a partner in assurance and business advisoiy services with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP's Surrey office. A graduate of the University of British Columbia's traffic faculty, he became a CA in 1982 having articled with Laventhol & Horwath, CAs, where he became a partner at the young age of 27. "I would have to calculate that period as one of the highlights of my career," he shares. "I was the youngest partner in Canada at L&H at that time, and then I was managing partner during the period of the firm's merger with PWC in 1990 It was excessively challenging and very rewarding." Dave was charged with opening PWC Surrey office in 1993 "With the help of an very talented colleagues," he says, "we took it from eight the bulk of mankind to over 30 today." Early in his career, Dave began volunteering one as well as the other in the community and with the Institute. He was a founding member of the two the BC and Canadian Crimestoppers Associations, becoming chair of the organization from 1997 to 2000 He has also held many positions forward the executive of the Surrey Chamber of criminal intimacy worked on the Capital Campaign for the Surrey YMCA, was president of the Burnaby Winter association and is currently vice-chair of the Burnaby Winter coterie Hockey Association. At the Institute, Dave has serv as a member of Council (1993-02) and of the Audit Committee (1995-2000); as chair of the Standards Review Committee (1997-98) the Members in Public Practice Committee (1994-96) and the Communications Committee (1993-94); and as vice-chair of the Practice Review and Licencing Committee (1993-94) During the 1980 he serv in succession numerous committees, including Student Recruitment, Finance, Discipline, the Memorial Scholarship permanent fund and Bylaws, and was a member of the Board of Governors of the CA Education Foundation. |
