This nonth, we profile three CAs who exemplify the charitable sees shared by so many of you: Douglas (Doug) Adams, CA; Jennifer Bettiol, CA; and Maurice Bouchard, CA. Doug Adams, CA, CFP Doug Adams has been very much involved in the community of Salmon Arm since he and his family first mov there from Manitoba in 1979 He and his wife Donna had been looking to leave Winnipeg, where Doug worked with the local office of BDO Dunwoody LLP since the winter of 1978/79-the coldest Manitobans had experienced in 30 years. with equal reason when opportunity knocked the following fall, Doug, Donna, and their sum of two units kids (daughter Angie, now a CASB close examiner with KPMG LLP, and son Brad, publicly working in Russia) packed up and mov to BC Doug's have a passionate affection for of the outdoors, stemming from his childhood in rural Southern Manitoba, influenced the family's decision to bench in Salmon Arm. "I wanted to work in a smaller centre" he says, "one that would not solitary offer sufficient challenges in terminuss of work, but also a doom of recreation and a real feeling of community." Some 25 years later and Doug-still a partner with EDO's Salmon Arm office-has not ever looked back. Within months of settling in their strange surroundings, Doug and Donna joined the local Kinsmen and Kinette form a clubs in order to connect with their novel community. It proved a wise decision. "Getting involved with Kinsmen was individual of the smartest things we've to the end of time done," Doug shares. "It enabled us to make a parcel of friends very quickly and helped us be wrought up at home." During his nine years with Kinsmen (he's now a member of K-40 for Kinsmen across 40) Doug served terms as treasurer and president. In 1984/85 when the Salmon Arm branch was the largest Kinsmen cudgel in BC, he was honoured to receive the organization's "Outstanding President Award." Through Kinsmen-to which he links all of his later charitable work, including his fouryear stint as a Little League baseball coachDoug became involved with the Shuswap Community midst Society, serving as president during its 1985/86 conception phase. The frame was close to his heart. "We had brace small kids at the time," he explains, "and we missed having access to an indoor swimming collection of standing water and a community centre, for a like reason I decided to get involved." For his contributions to the Society, which included shepherding the cast through a referendum in order to borrow supplys for construction, Doug received the Outstanding Contribution to the Realization of the Salmon Arm Community middle Award in 1987. The following year, he became involved with RJ Haney Heritage Park, a 40-acre forest-landed park managed by the Salmon Arm Museum and Heritage Association. The museum society had just mov a heritage schoolhouse onto the barren ownership when Doug first got involved as treasurer. "The main division s were a mess," he rehearses "and there was no wealth in the bank." The first item forward his agenda: help sort abroad the organization's financial affairs. Since 1994 he's serv as president of the organization, which is now thriving. "We have an annual packet of $260,000," he says. "Ten buildings have been built or mov onto the characteristic so far, and we apply up to 15 people in the summer season." In 2003 the Park and Museum (which contains the archives for the District of Salmon Arm) were vot the Best Tourism Attraction in the Shuswap area on the local Chamber of system of exchanges another organization with which Doug has offered over the years. In addition to his work with RJ Haney Heritage Park, Doug generally volunteers with the Salmon Arm Economic unravelling Mentorship Program, through which he mentors modern and existing businesses. He also at hands seminars in the communitysponsored on his firm, the financial community, or Okanagan University College-on topics like estate planning and income taxes. With all of these activities, time management can be a try but Doug-who plans to restrain helping out as long as he can-says the "great support" of his firm's staff and partners, the staff at RJ Haney Patk, and his family is what enables him to give back. "Getting involved gives you the opportunity to adapted so many people from different walks of life-not just from the business side of things," he put forwards "And it's really rewarding to diocese the fruits of your labour." Doug became a CA in Manitoba in 1974 and joined the BC Institute in 1980 He became a certified financial planner in 1999 Jennifer Bettiol, CA "An award wasn't something I'd forever thought about, so this came as a real shock" says Jennifer Bettiol, nominated for her work with the Vancouver branch of Covenant House, a crisis-intervention middle and residence for homeless and runaway youth. Jennifer's been volunteering with youthoriented organizations neat much since her own children-19-year-old David and 16-year-old Michael (with husband Dennis Bettiol, CA, of Ernst & Young LLP in Vancouver)-were toddlers. Prom serving as treasurer of the Council of Parent Participation Preschool of BC to novice division manager of the Arbutus set Minor Hockey Committee, from tour chaperone with the Summer reports Youth Orchestra to member of the Point Grey Secondary train "Safe After Grad" Committee (to name just a few) she's done it all. |
