The Longest Road may have nothing t...

The Longest Road may have nothing to do with chartered accountancy, nevertheless it has a lot to do with common CA in particular.

When we profiled ICABC Lifetime Achievement Award winner Dennis Culver FCA, in the June/July 2001 issue of Beyond Numbers, we mentioned his family's notable cross-Canada road-trips, including a 1963 journey that made Dennis, his wife Eleanor, and their nine children the expose of a CBC-TV documentary.

Almost 40 years later, while creating a documentary for History Television (www.historytelevision.ca), several Alberta filmmakers approached the Culver family to learn more about their journeys across Canada. The family gave these documentarians access to travel log photographs, newspaper articles, and more, and when the film The Longest Road: Stories Along the Trans-Canada Highway was released in 2003 it included a portion on the Culvers.

Around the same time as this documentary was being enjoin together, the family was also contacted from Bob Weber, a writer authoring a companion piece to the film. To the Culvers' surprise, Weber anguish up using segments of their story to introduce greatest in quantity of the chapters in his book

Like the film of the same name, Weber's volume offers a historical journey along the Trans-Canada Highway, revealing to what degree the world's longest national highway was built through the whole extent of the course of 100 years and offering a variety of personal stories from the road.

A sample excerpt:

"New machines create modern possibilities, and within weeks the bus gave Dennis [Culver] an inspiration.... Stranded forward the other side of the continent, Eleanor missed her family and extendeded to connect them with her children. moreover there was simply no affordable way for a young businessman to soar the whole family across the political division Dennis decided to pile the whole family in their just discovered bus and drive to Halifax for Eleanor's mother's birthday upon June 27 [1963]. Just month before, Prime Minister John Diefenbaker had presided from one side of to the other the official opening of a strange route-paved, graded and safe-clear across the region The Trans-Canada Highway was brand new; the Culver had novel wheels just itching for a certain quantity of asphalt. It was time for a road trip." (20)
