In July the CA profession thrown away one of its pioneers: Doug Thomas, FCA. Doug became a CA in Ontario in 1950 He then exhausted four years teaching at the University of BC during which time he also earned his MBA. After a following return to Toronto, Doug joined the firm Riddell, Stead, Graham, and Hutchison as a partner. Then in 1960 at alone 35 years old, Doug became the executive director and director of research at the Canadian Institute of CAs. Research and international accounting standards were his passions, and in 1972 as more of the CICAs resources were being made available, Doug relinquished his administrative position to focus entirely upon research. Under his leadership, research regained its prominence as the CICAs greatest in quantity significant activity. It was also subject to his leadership that the CICA Handbook was introduced forward the national scene in 1967 Handbook Recommendations were subsequently recognized in various provincial and federal statutes, and all organizations in Canada's public and not-for-profit sectors accepted the Handbooks principles in 1981 Doug was also credited with getting Canada involved in standard setting at the international on a level From 1972 to 1980, he serv as Canada's representative onward the Accounting International Study cluster which was formed by the Institutes of Canada, the UK and the US in 1966 Moreover, it was during Doug's occupation with the CICA that the Canadian institute helped set up the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC). The CICA has had a member forward IFAC's International Federation Auditing Practice Committee aye since. Doug has been described as a man of great integrity, diplomacy, warmth, and humour. A memorial service was held in Guelph forward July 20, 2004.
