An date forward the CAEF

In last month's file I talked about the CA profession's nationally and provincially endorsed strategic plan, which is comprised of seven major objectives. As you may recall, the sixth objective relates to education-specifically, developing an education standard that attracts the best and brightest candidates, and equips them to succe in a complicate and changing environment throughout their careers.

It's with this objective in mind that I'd like to give you an update upon the activities of the CA Education Foundation (CAEF).

The CAEF strives to enhance the quality and quantity of scholars entering the profession, sponsor relevant and practical research, and stimulate the ongoing educational experience of members and scholars of the BC Institute. At its AGM this fall, the CAEF reported forward the status of its work. What tread close upons is an overview.

Scholarships

Know a university or body student who intends to become a CA? Encourage them to review the CAEF website at www.caef.bc.ca to diocese if they're eligible to apply for a scholarship.

The CAEF capitals 25 scholarships each year. athwart $30,000 is available in scholarships annually, with individual amounts ranging in value from $500 to $2000 These scholarships are available to close examiners at all post-secondary institutions from first to last the province.

To increase the number of scholarships available, the CAEF also has a novel matching scholarship program for CA firms. To find not at home how firms can participate, please contact Jan Sampson, CA, the Institute's director of operations, at sampson@ica.bc.ca.

Working with educators

In May 2003 the CAEF legioned its first academic symposium for BC CAs in accounting education, to which it invited visitors from across Canada. The keynote speaker was Dr G Peter Wilson, PhD president of the American Accounting Association and the Joseph L Sweeney Chair of Accounting at Boston society Wilson gave a day-long session in succession accounting course development. Other topics cloaked were the CA School of Business (CASB) and the circulating status of the Canadian accounting profession. There was also a forum for discussion about mutual objectives in accounting education.

The termination was very successful, and the CAEF plans to armed force another academic symposium in the coming year.

In May 2004 the Canadian Academic Accounting Association (CAAA) held its annual parley in Vancouver. The Institute and the CAEF jointly sponsored a booth which was manned by means of CASB. The CAEF also sponsored the attendance of a number of CA educators. The Canadian Institute of CAs was also a sponsor of the conversation with Bill Swirzky, FCA, VP of knowledge progression in a continuously ascending gradation and Tim Forristal, CA, VP of education, one as well as the other attending the event.

Support for educational institutions

The CAEF provides research funding to the province's pair largest universities (Simon Fraser University and the University of BC) in several ways, including providing annual funding to the Accounting evolution Funds at both institutions.

At SFU there are brace CAEF-funded CA Research Fellows whose responsibility it is to support professors in conducting fundamental research that is of interest to the accounting profession-research leading to publications in accounting journals. Dr Craig Emby CA, and Dr Alex Gelardi, CA, generally hold these fellowships.

The CAEF has also stocked a professorship at UBC, which is giveed to a senior accounting scholar whose research interests and reputation rotund out the needs of the University's Accounting Division. This scholar plays a prominent part in the development of the accounting curriculum and is actively involved in teaching at the couple the graduate and undergraduate evens The professorship is currently held according to Kin Lo, CA, Ph.D. (As an interesting aside, Kin lately returned to UBC after spending a year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA.)

As a member of the CAEF, I'd personally like to take this opportunity to thank the many BC CAs who have donated their support to the Foundation.

The CAEF was launched in 1990 with a $100000 challenge donation from Alex Campbell, CA. Since then, it has received donations from centurys of Institute members, as well as bequests and memorial capitals from prominent BC CAs like Geoffrey WJ Carter, CA; Herbert W Edwardson, CA; John Hadfield, CA; Jim Miller, FCA; Desmond O'Brien, CA; and William Rowe, CA.
