Checking in with industry CAs Since...Checking in with industry CAs Since taking onward the role of the Institute's industry rep in midOctober 2004 I've contacted about 80 CAs after their respective prevail upons into industry. I've found that many CAs have lingering questions related to professional progressive growth industry associations, career development, and/or work itself. My task is not to make past the many professionals who provide advice for a fee-I'm here, rather, to help members with their questions on either pointing them in the right direction or referring them to someone who can. I've also set that CAs are genuinely looking for opportunities to network with other CAs. Many of our industry CAs are the solitary accounting professionals in their offices, and they're eager to make known a support network to help them deal with the many strange emerging issues. Networking with others in their industry-whether to talk business or confront socially-provides opportunities for peer education, support, and business building, and uncloses the door to potential piece of work opportunities now or in the future Recent events Toastmasters On February 1 2005 the ICABC legioned a demonstration of Toastmasters for CAs in downtown Vancouver. The International Director of Toastmasters, Gary Schmidt, DTM gave the heartfelt story of his personal transformation from a role who never asked questions or spoke in class (despite having a order in communications), to one who is animated and comfortable speaking in assurance of large groups-whether ICABC members or US senators. Toastmasters Anne Kramer, Mike Robinson, and John Hawkins then l arranges of CAs through impromptu speeches. This exciting end motivated about 50 CAs to charter brace new Toastmasters groups in downtown Vancouver. "Speaking Cents" now suiteds every Tuesday at lunch (12-1:15pm) and "Burnt Toast" suiteds every Tuesday after work (5:30-7pm) Another assign places to the "Early Byrdes," are looking for additional recruits to proper Tuesday mornings (7:15-8:30am) before they can charter. have the appearances that CAs like to learn the art of communications onward Tuesdays! If you're interested in joining undivided of these groups or would like to help start a Toastmasters collection in your area, please contact me at 604-488-2621 or dolenc@ica.bc.ca. "Challenges and Opportunities" As part of our industry strategy, we're creating networking opportunities for members in industry. forward February 22, 2005, for instance, we held the Challenges and Opportunities networking incident in downtown Vancouver. More than 50 members attended the issue where they got the chance to hear a panel of four speakers share their experiences as CAs working in industry. Panellists strike Elton, CA, president and chief executive officer, BC Hydro; John Caputo, CA, co-president and chief financial officer, Maximizer Software Inc; Mary Hemmingsen, CA, manager power planning and portfolio management, BC Hydro; and Rick Johal, CA, controller Wallmark hearths Ltd., spoke of the potencys CAs bring to industry. They also spoke of the potential obstacles CAs face-explaining, for instance, in what way strong analytical skills can sometimes hinder the ability to delegate and vegetate in new areas. The panellists also discussed the differences between motivating staff in public practice and motivating staff in industry, and shared the exercise s they've learned in communicating with staff, suppliers, and stakeholders in industry. Their guide messages; always add value, make decisions as notwithstanding that you were the owner, treat employee as your biggest asset, and always act ethically. The presentations were stimulating and well received, and have strengthened our commitment to continue hosting more of these shadows of events and networking opportunities.
