In addition to our FCAs, Lifetime Achievement Winners, and Early Achievers, countles other CAs do the profession supercilious each year-among them, the many CAs who consign considerable time and energy to their communities. This year, the Institute recognizes the charitable efforts of the following six CAs: Lydia Baran, WiI Clark, cognizance Davidson, Gary Luedke, Chris Samis, and Geoff Stagg, the 2005 recipients of our Community Service Awards. (Look for a profile of the Institute's Ritchie W McCloy Award Winner for CA Volunteerism, Hugh Hepburn, CA, in nearest month's issue!)

Lydia Baran, CA

Lydia Baran has been singled revealed for her work with the Victoria Chapter of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada (CCFC) a national not-for-profit voluntary medical research Foundation committed to finding a method of treatment for inflammatory bowel disease or "IBD."

She first got involved with the organization after reading a present notice in the October 2000 issue of Beyond Numbers magazine.



"You ran the CCFC's supplication for a treasurer in your publication," she says, "and it struck a chord. A upright friend of mine has sustained for years with intestinal disease."

Cited for her business acumen and positive attitude, Lydia has been credited with streamlining the organization's record-keeping arrangement and giving the Chapter a "professional quality." She has also gone above and beyond the responsibilities awaited of her as treasurer, helping, for example, to organize a of the Victoria Chapter's major fundraising issues and serving as its delegate at the national annual general meeting in 2004 Described as "an superior communicator," Lydia has also assumed the character of Chapter liaison with offer Victoria, a position that enables her to find the correct position for each incoming volunteer

"I've taken in succession more tasks with this organization because many of the the public involved are sick and have limited life to do all that indigences to be done," she explains, adding: "I really appreciate my righteous health. IBD is a painful and exhausting disease. What IBD sufferer like my friend and many of the tenders I work with, need is a cure"

Lydia has post her own consulting practice-primarily in internal audit-since the mid-1990s, and is generally under contract with the Office of the Auditor General of BC where she is assisting with the audit of the province's year-end accounts. In addition to her work with the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation, she has also tendered with the United Way and the Times-Colonist 10K run

"The CCFC has garnered international defer to for its medical research," she points without "I'm proud to be associated with this organization professionally, and delighted to have made similar strong friendships socially."

Wil Clark, CA

Wil Clark has serv as a board member and honorary treasurer of Silver Threads Service for 21 years.

"What has kept me there in such a manner long are my relationships with staff members," Wil says, "and feeling like I was making a difference."

He first became involved with the organization-a non-profit society that provides support services and midmost points to seniors in Greater Victoria-in 1984 while working with the City of Victoria.

"Not lengthy after my arrival at the City, I was promot to a of the present day position," Wil recounts. "My recently made known boss at the time [Dave Gawley, CA] proposeed that I serve on the board of Silver Threads as treasurer. He'd been the treasurer for a small in number years and was looking for a successor.

"It was a natural arrangement," Wil explains, "because the Silver Threads head office was just across the square from City Hall. This proximity has meant that I've been readily available to Silver Threads staff through the years, and able to work closely with the head office staff in succession financial, human resource, and administrative matters."

Over the years, he has guided the organization by means of the many changes in financial reporting requirements related to non-profits. by dint of providing financial management and direction, he has also helped the organization achieve significant financial stability.

"Funding has become harder and harder to flow by," he points out. "We are commonly in a situation where traditionally stable funding sources are declining, forcing us to consider elsewhere and to adopt a more business-like approach to delivering our programs."

Wil is committed to helping the organization fitting its current demands, which include the prosperous operation of a new multi-million dollar facility that houses the Sidney Silver Threads middle point seniors' housing, health and wellness services, and the production kitchen of the organization's Meals onward Wheels program.

He started his company ST Management Services Inc. in 2005 after working with the City of Victoria in a variety of capacitiesincluding representative director of finance-for more than 20 years.

"I've been able to exhibit some financial skills to Silver Threads because of my CA, and management/supervisory experience because of my parts at the City," Wil says. "Nonprofits desperately ne that kind of support. Staff are generally not well paid, further are there because they really believe in the work-their enthusiasm cleans off after a while!"
