This year, the Institute instants E...This year, the Institute instants Early Achievement Awards to couple deserving CAs: Kyman Chan and Elaine Davison. Kyman Chan, CA Whether providing strategic advice to his firm's clients or helping a community organization achieve its vision, Kyman Chan works to find the solution that fits. And he does it well, say his colleagues in Victoria. In fact, his problem-solving skills are what, in part, motivated these colleagues to nominate him for the Early Achievement Award. Originally expecting to focus forward solving political problems, Kyman earned a double major in economics and political science from the University of Victoria in 1990 "My goal at that time," he explains, "was to work in policy unravelling or strategic planning with a large corporation or direction entity." Realizing that a sound financial background could lead to a position in which he could commend business improvements, Kyman took the advice of a boss-who'd proposeed he earn a designation-and of his sister Jennie-who, at the time, was working onward a management-consulting project while articling towards her CA designation-and pierceed the CA program. "I went back to exercise to study commerce after I decided I destitutioned more education to get me where I wanted to go" he says. After picking up the necessary accounting courses at Camosun literary institution [i]or[/i] seminary of learning he later landed a position with Grant Thornton LLP in Victoria. Since qualifying as a CA in 1997 Kyman has advanceed to help lead the Victoria office's Assurance and Business Advisory Services practice. Kyman's volunteerism with several non-profit organizations includes advising the BC Cancer Foundation, the United Way, and the Royal and McPherson Theatres Society. This year, he is combining his parts on the executive of the Victoria CA Association and onward the BC Cancer Foundation board to behold the proceeds from the Association's annual golf tournament contributed to the Foundation-a welcome contribution after the Foundation forfeited one of its sponsors earlier this year. "For me" Kyman shares, "it's significant upon a professional level because our office missing two recently retired partners to cancer in the last scarcely any years, and on a personal plain because my father passed away from cancer about a year ago. in such a manner I like the fact that I can work with the couple organizations and use the profile of the CA profession to raise the profile of a devastating disease." Other community organizations that have benefited from his efforts through the years are the St Michaels University academy Alumni Association and the BC Schizophrenia Society. Despite all of his accomplishments, Kyman was caught most distant guard by the Early Achievement Award. "I was excessively surprised," he admits. "A accident of what I do follows from watching people around me likewise there are lots of CAs gone out there who are just as, if not more, deserving of the recognition." Modesty aside, Kyman has demonstrated that he is in good earnest deserving of this award, and the Institute congratulates him forward his accomplishments. Elaine Davison, CA Also receiving the Early Achievement Award this year is Elaine Davison, the CFO of Qtrade Canada in Vancouver. Growing up Elaine planned to be a veterinarian, yet this plan changed in high drill during an unsettling experience at a vet's office. Seeking a career that wouldn't involve surgery she subsequently revolveed her attention to business; and after her uncle Tony Hui, CA, told her about the opportunities the CA designation had afforded him, she devised a novel plan: earning a bachelor of commerce After graduating from the University of British Columbia in 1992 Elaine started articling with Ernst & Young LLP in Vancouver, where she earned her designation in 1995 Despite having been a CA for simply ten years, Elaine has already achieved sum of two units significant successes in the areas of finance and investing. First, in December 1998 she was fix uponed by the CEO of the Vancouver Stock Exchange to be the financial half of a team entrusted with the tasks of evaluating and then managing the merger of the Vancouver and Alberta stock exchanges (which ultimately created the Canadian hap Exchange). |
