Any insight we gain into our acknowledge motivation and presentation of self can help us improve our conflict-management skills. One instrument for determining "conflict styles" is the Thomas Kilmann Conflict fashion Instrument?® or TKI,10 a leading conflict resolution assessment tool for more than 25 years. The TKI pinpoints five ways persons handle conflict: * Avoiding - grave assertiveness and low cooperativeness (the goal is to delay); * Competing - High assertiveness and grave cooperativeness (the goal is to win); * Accommodating - depressed assertiveness and high cooperativeness (the goal is to yield); * Compromising - Moderate assertiveness and moderate cooperativeness (the goal is to find middle ground); and * Collaborating - High assertiveness and high cooperativeness (the goal is to find a win/win). Each of these conflict ways has benefits and drawbacks. Although we all use many, if not all, of these approaches at various times, we each have single or two on which we rely predominately. one time aware of how we usually react and where the pluses and minuses are, we can choose/learn to give employment to the various styles more strategically. Another analytical tool that can shed any light on conflict styles is the force Deployment Inventory?® (SDI). Based in succession "Relationship Awareness Theory," developed by dint of psychologist Dr. Elias H. Porter in 1971 SDI focuses in succession human motivation and offers a way to understand and manage the interaction of values and conflicts in relationships. Porter's theory is useful because it examines the motivations behind behaviours-our avow and others', in good times and bad. Based upon this more complete understanding, the public can choose their behaviour from a broader and deeper station of options. Relationship Awareness Theory encompasses four basic propositions: 1 We all do what we do because we want to have feeling good about ourselves; 2. We nurse to take one approach to life when we be warmed that things are going well, and another when faced with opposition or conflict; 3 A "personal weakness" is a personal might that has been overdone or misapplied; and 4 We take care of to perceive others' behaviours in consequence of our own filters-called the Motivational Value System(TM)
