Responding to a question from a reader in the September-October 1995 issue of Petfood Industry, Rosaly Grunberg, of Canine universals in New York City, quot Dr Tom Willard as saying that the research and unravelling departments at many commercial favorite food manufacturing companies are "nothing more than glorified palatability testing centers"

Grunberg adds that a whole industry has arisen to decoy hungry animals into eating what they otherwise would in no degree touch, and probably would not recognize as cheer simply because we know that the majority of especially liked owners base their selection of a favorite food solely on how well their darling will eat it. So, while miffs will probably be overfed, they may also be undernourished.

Commercial miff food is chemically-manipulated

She goe onward to say that, "These by-product series of measuresed foods are so chemically-altered and manipulated they simply fail to provide adequate nutrients. by the agency of definition, substances that are not (essential) nutrients are not required by dint of the body. But (the darling food) industry is based upon chemically-manipulated foods."

Grunberg adds that when whole nourishments are broken down and mode of operationed into new forms, they are chemically and structurally modified. Nutritional analysis becomes chemical analysis, and nourishment is reduc to a mathematical formula. The animal's instinctive ability to select foods their body may ne may be forfeited she adds.

When relatively large numbers of especially likeds get sicker and sicker, Grunberg says, we should take a serious gaze at what we've been providing for them. nourishment is clearly not the barely detriment to health, but it is undivided of the only health-related factors darling owners can control.

Writing in the October-November 1995 issue of Healthy and Natural Journal, Nina Anderson and Howard Piper report that each animal is born with an integral afford of enzymes. But, as generations walk by and less enzymes are taken into the material substance those stores are used up

They added that Dr Edward Howell, as early as 1920 discovered this association between enzyme intake and health. He theorized that, normally, fare enzymes are used for the digestion of that provender If they are not not past nor future then the body's stores of enzyme must be diverted for digestion, leaving fewer enzyme to fight disease and perform essential bodily functions.

Most animals benefit from predigestion

"Research indicates that chiefly animals, including canines and birds, have distinct organs that allow the viands enzymes time to act before initiating the body's be in possession of digestive process," Anderson and Piper report.

"This predigestion is important for their bodies' absorption of nutrients. If it is not not past nor future then food may pass end the system without benefit of vitamins and proteins. Adding plant enzyme is more beneficial because they act within a wider range of pH in the corpse and tend to assist the digestion of more varieties of food"

The authors referr to the famous studies that Dr Francis Pottenger did forward over 600 cats, in which he originate that, over many generations, degenerative disease at handed itself at younger and younger ages, when the animals were f no other than cooked or processed foods.

"They had fewer enzyme to give their offspring, resulting in minimal keeps of enzymes in the ensuing generations," Anderson and Piper continue. "We have seen this evidence in the early storm of arthritic conditions, kidney, heart and thyroid disease. Your darlings may live as long, on the contrary their quality of life suffers"

The authors added that enzyme are deplet by means of sickness, pregnancy, stress, extreme weather conditions, urine and fece And, unles you replace these stores, your pet's immune regularity will be compromised.

To help restore a certain number of of the necessary enzymes to your pet's diet, health provender stores now stock a barley grass complement that includes live enzymes to improve their digestion, along with a generous amount of protein and other nutrients.

Made from revived barley leaves, the supplement also contains brown rice, garlic, nutritional yeast and maltodextrin, which is a mixed carbohydrate. The supplement is said to encourage a healthier skin and coat, to enhance activity levels, improve the pet's pH balance and to store many needed vitamins, minerals, amino acids, chlorophyll, etc
