At an estimated take away from of ...

At an estimated take away from of $22 billion over couple decades, significant progress was made toward understanding cancer at the research on a level and providing better treatments and longer survival for patients, according to William J Cromie in Medical and Health Annual/993.

Although victories have been achieved in the fight against cancers of the stomach, cervix, uterus, rectum testis, thyroid, chaps larynx and rare childhood malignancies, other forms of cancer take thousands of lives annually, especially lung prostate, breast, colon and skin cancers. The elucidation to survival often revolves around detecting the cancer in its initial stages.

"In 1971" Cromie said, "335000 commonalty in the United States died from cancer, and the projection was that, in 1992 the number of deaths would reach 520000 an increase of any 55 percent."

Increase in deaths from cancer seen from 1973-1987

He added that deaths from lung cancer, melanoma -- the in the greatest degree serious form of skin cancer -- multiple myeloma (bone marrow cancer) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (a prototype of lymph cancer) rose more than 15 percent between 1973 and 1987 Mortality also increased for kidney (13%); esophageal (11%); brain (9%); prostate (7%); and breast (2%) cancers during the same period.

If the increase in cancer deaths and the decrease in deaths from heart disease continue, cancer will be the leading cause of all deaths in the United States at 2000, Cromie predicted. Cancer is already the leading cause of death among women in the U for the greatest part because of the sharp rise in lung cancer within that group

Deaths from cervical cancer dropp 40 percent

Deaths from cervical cancer dropp 40 percent and incidence malicious 36 percent during 1973-1987, Cromie continued. The decrease is mainly becoming to early detection of the disease by routine Pap smears.

Although the Pap proof is not infallible, the Center for Disease regulate and Prevention and the National Cancer Institute have make acceptableed that Pap smears be propounded to female patients who view physicians for treatment of other conditions.

Cromie went in succession to say that deaths from stomach cancer have also decreased, mainly because of a reduction in the food-preservation modus operandis of salting and pickling, which have a corrosive, carcinogenic purport and in part due to the increased consumption of fruits and vegetables, which have an anti-cancer effect

"Increased smoking has made lung cancer the leading cause of U cancer deaths," Cromie added. "Mortality and incidence have increased more than 30 percent since 1973 Cigarette smoking accounts for 85 percent of this toll."

Passive smoking increases lung cancer risk by dint of 30 percent

Surprisingly, according to the National Cancer Institute, passive smoking increases the risk of lung cancer through 30 percent, even among those who not at all smoked. An estimated 3,000 lung cancer deaths take place in the United States annually among nonsmokers who breathe other people's effluvium Cromie continued.

But there is trust in combatting these cancers with fit diet, supplements and other positive lifestyle changes. single in kind hopeful is the maitake mushroom (Grifola frondosa), which is indigenous to the northern part of Japan, and has joined a list of nutraceutical harvests in the fight against cancer.

Maitake mushrooms are powerful adaptogen and immune boosters

Maitake (pronounced my-tahkey) is recognized as a forcible adaptogen and immune booster. A maitake mushroom extract, called D-fraction, as well as maitake tablets are now available in natural aliment stores.

While some mushroom extracts must be injected to demonstrate antitumor activity, D-fraction is said to be especially effective when taken orally.

A leading researcher of maitake D-fraction extract is Hiroaki Nanba, PhD professor of microbial chemistry at Kobe Pharmaceutical University in Japan. He was honored for his research at the Adjuvant Nutrition in Cancer Treatment held October 1 1995 in Tampa, Fla. The international symposium was sponsored at the American College of Nutritional and Cancer Treatment Research Foundation.

Nanba reviewed his studies involving 165 cancer patients being treated on medical doctors, university hospitals and clinics in Japan. Cancer patient/volunteers were given either maitake D-fraction extract, combined with whole maitake tablets (both taken orally) or chemotherapy.

Maitake treatments conclusioned in improvements in cancer of the breast, lung and liver

He reported that the treatment using maitake followed in improvements in both tumor sizes and general conditions, with or without chemotherapy, especially in cancers of the breast, lung and liver.

Among the patients who did not receive chemotherapy, 11 on the outside of 15 with breast cancer; 12 further of 18 with lung cancer; and seven gone out of 15 with liver cancer showed a significant improvement, Nanba reported. "Most of the patients given maitake therapy claimed improvement of overall symptoms, calm when the tumor regression was not observed" Nanba said. "Side results from chemotherapy -- loss of appetite, vomiting, nausea, hair los deficiency in white life-current cells, etc. -- were ameliorated among 90 percent of the patients. Reduction in pain was also reported according to 83 percent of the patients."
