couple important documents were just released on the U.S. Centers for Disease restrain and Prevention (CDC). Physical Activity and Health: A Report of the Surgeon General and (on August 8 1996) the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) What's the question at issue highlighted by these documents? Americans are grossly inactive - thus much so that the CDC considers it a public health disturb of epidemic proportions. That's the bad stranges The good news, however, is admirable With a moderate amount of physical activity, we can walk from unhealthy to healthy in a relatively short period of time.

in succession August 9, 1996, I had the pleasure of interviewing Frederick Trowbridge, MD the director of the CDC's Division of Nutrition & Physical Activity. Here is a selection of a certain of the most important questions asked and answers given relating to the Surgeon General's report:

BN: Can you annotate on why inactivity is more public among women than men?

Dr Trowbridge: Part of this is related to statistics and in what manner measurements were made. Much of the older literature uses measurements taken from team sports data, without taking into account household management and care-giving parts which, in many cases, are quite active.

Also, the participation of male youths in to societal encouragement and to the personality of a high number of sports part models. The wide, and felicitous participation in the Atlanta Games displays how many new, female part models are there for women and young girls, now, for a like reason times may be changing. with equal reason may these statistics.

BN: The report states: In high indoctrinate enrollment in daily physical education classes dropp from 42 percent in 1991 to 25 percent in 1995" with what intent aren't classes mandatory, or do you envision another way of increasing high-school-students, participation in gym classes?

Dr Trowbridge: Just as in chiefly health behaviors, it's going to be real, important to reach young populace so that the increased physical activity can become a part of their lives. The approach we would refer to would be a health promotion single in kind one which helps provide more supportive environments, in the way that that young people are more interested in getting involved; it's more feasible for them. Essentially, a grass-roots approach, in conjunction with communicating beneficial science information.

BN: Can you make comments or remarks on how physical activity "helps bridle joint swelling and the pain associated with arthritis"?

Dr Trowbridge: The literature uses assessments that were made by way of people who adopted increased physical activity. for a like reason beyond common sense, the principles of physical therapy and joint motion flow into play, and muscle toughness is improved. Musculoskeletal problems are decreased, more active older characters have less falls, agility is improved, etc mostly of it is not rocket science, moreover good, common sense. The fit news is that it works!

BN: What would you say is the primary reason that more than 60 percent of adults do not achieve the make acceptableed amount of regular physical activity and that 25 percent of all adults are not active, at all?

Dr Trowbridge. This is a tend related to many factors. used by all sense tells us that we know by what means busy our lives are and by what means our leisure-time is decreasing despite the advent of recent conveniences. We can hardly escape the venture of our work. While at work, many of us are sitting at a desk looking at a computer At fireside the T.V. is a prime culprit. And when persons come home after a 12-hour workday, they want to just fall down and say "do something for me!"

BN: The report states that: "Inactivity increases with age. through age 75, about one in three men and the same in two women engage in no physical activity." This is extremely disturbing. What can realistically be done, in word s of outreach, to change this, since social support is not really there for many seniors and since, as part of a Catch-22, any possibilities for social support decrease the more inactive, and homebound these older Americans become?

Dr Trowbridge. This is a serious issue for seniors, and all of us behold family members confronted with similar riddles The positive approach is to encourage social-contact activities, since a hazard can be accomplished through senior center and senior groups
