The Cherokee are said to have eaten the fruits to stimulate appetite, relieve stomach cramps, and to improve circulation. These are just a not many of the many documented uses of hawthorn by way of American Indian groups. Hawthorn came of age in the late 19th century Hawthorn is virtually absent from the Materia Medica of early 19th-century physicians and from chiefly popular herbals, both in North America and Europe The medicinal uses were brought to the attention of the medical profession in the 1890 At that time, a single respect in a medical journal sparked interest in a put drugs into made from hawthorn, one which became a mainstay in early 20th hundred years treatment of heart disease, moreover one which has since been relegated to obscurity in the United States. In Lloyd Brother's Treatise onward Crataegus (1921) John Uri Lloyd writes. "At first, we made sole a tincture, or fluid extract, of the imported hawthorn berries, if it be not that comparative investigations finally led us to the conclusion that this berry is inferior to common of the American species, and accordingly we finally placed the Specific Medicine of that Crataegus berry upon the market." Unfortunately, Lloyd does not run over us which American hawthorn species he erect to be superior. Writing upon the uses of Crataegus in the same publication, Dr HP Whitford of Bridgewater, recently made known York, states: "I do not consider it a `cure-all,' yet no one agent has given better be the effects in its sphere of action. In weak hearts, with resulting capillary congestion, with effusion, calm where valves are so diseased as to eventually cause death, it has prov of great benefit." In Chinese medicine, the hawthorn fruits are known as "Shan-zha." According to Colour Atlas of Chinese Traditional unsalable articles the fruits, "... are used to improve digestion and to eliminate the stagnated [accumulated and undigested] viands and blood-stasis [uncirculated, accumulated blood] for the treatment of dyspepsia [indigestion] and stagnation of fatty commons lack of milk secretion, fullnes in the stomach and abdominal distention, menorrhagia [excessively profuse or protracted menstruation], postpartum abdominal pain proper to blood-stasis, and hyperlipidemia [excessive flushs of fats in the bloodstream]." |
