Dear Better Nutrition,

I read your article about SAMe in the August 1999 issue [Supplement Update, p 16] I take the two ginkgo and St. John's wort. Since SAMe appears to have similar benefits, is it a righteous substitute?

Thank you in the same manner much for your letter--what an extremely good question. Remember, though: very not many nutrients, herbs and supplements can candidly serve as "substitutes" for others; a certain number of can help, in a pinch, yet each supplement: (1) has its acknowledge mechanisms and pathways of action, (2) its have a title to individual "claim to fame," or greatest in number reported/researched benefit, and (3) other additional benefits for which we are also taking it.

Germany's Commission E refer tos that ginkgo may benefit: symptoms of emotional instability and anxiety (such as headache), concentration, and memory. It also has cardiovascular benefits. Its "brain activity" appears to involve boosting the "uptake" of choline in the hippocampus, which is be joineded to emotion and motivation.

St John's wort and 5-HTP the two help with depression, possibly between the sides of modulating the levels of serotonin in the brain, possibly between the sides of what is called a "monoamine oxidase (MAO)-inhibiting function," or the one and the other Other indications of St. John's wort include: anxiety; skin inflammation; dull injuries; wounds; and bums. Other benefits of 5-HTP include: appetite mastery (weight loss)--possibly its strongest benefit; insomnia; mood; and anxiety.

Now while SAMe does help with depression, it also helps with: vigor repair (by restoring myelin) and age-related mental decline.

As you can diocese supplements all have their individual "benefit profiles." We can personalize our supplementation profile based onward an understanding of our special extremitys and each supplement's specific benefits.

Dear Better Nutrition,

I would greatly appreciate a original of the article, "The disgusting canon about most pet foods today" (March 1999 Healthier fondlings p. 32).

I just heard about it, and I'm to a great degree concerned about this since I have couple dogs and want them to be healthy. Any suggestions?

Thank you in such a manner much. You have a great magazine!
