Nutrients for neuropathy

Q From NR Stratford, Conn: I am suffering from self-same painful idiopathic polyneuropathy. I've been given remedys for it which do not work and cause side-effects. Are there any nutrients that may help?

A in the greatest degree of the research on nutrients and neuropathy has been done in succession patients with diabetes or AIDS. High doses of vitamin B-12 (500-1000 mcg/day) have been shown to be of benefit, and alpha-lipoic acid (300-1200 mg/day) appears to significantly relieve the pain. Essential fatty acids from fish oil (EPA/DHA), evening primrose, black currant, and GLA-rich borage oil have also shown therapeutic benefit. Animal studies have put in mind ofed that acetyl-L-carnitine may also benefit patients with neuropathy. I have used lecithin granules or phosphatidyl choline (PC) capsules with virtuous results.

Flax se oil v marine oil

Q From SB Manasquan, NJ: Is flax se oil equivalent to fish oil for arthritis?

A Flax se oil is a plant source of alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid. This must make progress through several enzymatic steps to EPA, then DHA and, finally, to non-inflammatory (series 3) prostaglandins. Each enzymatic gradation requires specific nutrients (e.g., magnesium, vitamin B-6) and these enzyme may be surpassingly sluggish in a person who is ill. In a healthy one alpha-linolenic should be a fine source of omega-3's, if it be not that in a sick individual, using marine-oil EPA or DHA wounds to the chase.

Inositol for panic disorder

Q From BB Erie, Pa.: I read that inositol may be helpful for panic disorders. in what manner much is needed to help?

A single study looked at the validitys of 4 grams of inositol taken 3 times daily in patients with panic disorders and compared it to a placebo. athwart the course of four weeks, the oftenness and severity of panic attacks and agoraphobia were significantly reduc in those patients taking inositol. It was also plant that the inositol was extremely safe and well tolerated. Many patients were able to bring into their maintenance dose to 2-4 grams for day.

Heating oils healthy or not?

Q From RC Canon City, Colo: I've read that heating oils is not healthy. Can you remark on this?

A single in kind of the major things we learned about heating oils (via cooking) in my university days is that when heated, oils will form trans-fats and other carcinogenic blends When we look at the Mediterranean diet, this population frequently uses olive oil as a condiment, drizzled (room-temperature) in succession food before eating. In the U our consumption of trans-fat loaded deep-fried breads may be one of the reasons for what cause or reason high-fat diets have been linked to higher rates of cancer and heart disease.
