Beyond colon cancer The theory th...Beyond colon cancer The theory that fiber hinders colon cancer was introduced in the 1970 when scientists noticed that impoverished family in rural Africa had a lower incidence of colon cancer than Westerners living forward a rich diet. In the first example Dr. Arthur Schatzkin of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and his colleagues assigned 958 tribe to a diet low in fat, high in fiber and rich in fruits and vegetables. Possible flaws in the studies 1) Three to 4 years of either taking a daily wheat-bran supply or following a diet that was subdued in fat and high in fruits and vegetables may be too short a period to strictly evaluate the incidence of novel colorectal adenomas. It often takes a decade or more for tumors to begin and grow Perhaps dietary changes ne to be made early in life. The researchers say, "The mean age of the subdues at base line was 61 years. If nutritional factors influence critical issues in colorectal neoplasia at the molecular, cellular or tissue even only earlier in life, then a change in diet later in adult life may be ineffective. A relatively short period of dietary intervention (4 years) might also fail to make less the risk of recurrent adenomas." 2) In the first application of mind participants were told to render their fat intake. Fiber is still healthy Whether or not fiber is protective against colon cancer, the sum of two units studies discussed above should not discourage population from eating foods that have a pious fiber content, for several reasons: |
