The research team used a noninvasive measure to compare brainstem responses of 17 premature infants f breast milk and 20 preemies f formula designed for premature infants without these fatty acids.

After 4 weeks, the babies who received human milk had more mature brainstems than infants who were f formula. "Our findings put in mind of that infants fed breast milk have faster brainstem maturation, compared with infants f formula," infer Sanjit Amin, MD and his University of Rochester colleagues.

Previous studies have shown that premature infants f breast milk have higher IQs and visual functioning than infants f standard infant formula that was not appendixed with fatty acids, the authors note.
