Today we live in a world heavily w...Today we live in a world heavily weighted by environmental toxins. Since the World War II industrial droning our planet has become family to dangerous levels of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) unexpectedlys are toxins made up of organic (carbon-based) chemicals and synthetics. These pollutants are almost everywhere--our soil, cheer water, air and our bodies. We're mainly expos to unexpectedlys through the food we eat, although the public who live and work near direct sources of these toxins (eg industrial plants, farms) can also be expos by dint of skin contact and by breathing in the compounds Of the many centurys of POPs in our environment, a certain number of of the worst are: PCB (polychlorinated biphenyls), chlordane, DDT toxaphene, hexachlorobenzene and dioxin. These are six of the 12 greatest in number dangerous POPs targeted for global elimination by means of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee. This committee has bring outed a POPs Treaty that is to be signed in Stockholm, in May. What can we do? A lot! In 1996 the WWF and the Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers Association got together to "promote progressive growth and wider use of [] farming hypothesiss that are safer for farm families, consumer and the environment." In the first year, Wisconsin farmers make an incision in pesticide toxicity by 25 percent partly by the agency of eliminating 11 out of 12 high-risk explosions and partly via aggressive use of beneficial insects, or integrated pestilence management (IPM). Insecticide toxicity was reduc on a stunning 61 percent. according to purchasing organic foods and other viandss grown with low-impact agriculture strategies, we all can make a big difference. We can also bring our use of, and position to, environmental-toxins. Here are a not many things (recommended by the WWF) that we can all do: virid up your yard. Use fertilizing mixtures to improve soil health. Stop using pesticides around your house. Instead, use beneficial insects, so as ladybugs, and grow insect-repelling plants, eg basil, chives, mint, marigolds. pick household chemicals that are the least harmful. examine for the words "biodegradable" and "non-toxic" forward the label. Don't buy or use chlorine bleach. Avoid effects containing EDTA, NTA, phosphates or sodium hypochlorite. corrupt mercury-free or rechargeable batteries and dispose of them properly fare to WWF's Conservation Action Network (www.wwf.org/toxics/whatcando) to find abroad more. Take back our futurity By following these strategies, you and I can create markets in the just discovered economy that are built in succession principles of rational ecology. We can shelter the future of all life as we know it. COPYRIGHT 2001 PRIMEDIA Intertec, a PRIMEDIA Company. All Rights Reserved |
