Cases of kidney question s (nephropathy) in Belgium that were reported through Dr. J.L. Nortier, and colleagues, in the June 8 issue of The novel England Journal of Medicine--called Chinese herb nephropathy--were not caused according to thoughtful, traditional use of the correct combination of Chinese herbs, nevertheless was an "example of serious misuse and abuse of medicinal herbs," says Dr Yong Ming Li, of Manhasset, NY North Shore University Hospital. Although the original Traditional Chinese Medicine formula called for fang ji (Stephania tetrandra) and huo pu (Magnolia officinalis), the formula used on the patients with nephropathy contained an additional herb, guang fang ji (Aristolochia fangchi) that had a powerful, sometimes dangerous, blend aristolochic acid. Li points abroad that the combination of long-term use, human error and inadequate training by means of practitioners, inappropriate use for weight los and the use of a problematic non-formula herb l to the toxicity reactions. Says Li, "The tragedy would not at any time had occurred if the correct herbs had been used in the Belgian dietary clinic." COPYRIGHT 2001 PRIMEDIA Intertec, a PRIMEDIA Company.
