A application of mind which appeared in Psychosomatic Medicine, Journal of the American Psychosomatic Society, conclud that "certain individuals [] select less healthy foods when below stress." Underlying this study of 68 men and women was previous research that proposeed that two groups of the bulk of mankind are especially vulnerable to patterns of unhealthy eating: restrained eaters and emotional eaters. The participants were divided into violenceed (given 10 minutes to prepare a 4-minute tongue that they had to deliver after lunch) and unstress (listened tO a short, neutral-toned presentation before the meal). The inclemencyed emotional eaters ate more sweet, high-fat, energy-dense rationss (e.g. cakes and chocolate cookies) than did the unstress non-emotional eaters. Scientists believe that carbohydrate-rich/protein-poor feeds affect mood-influencing brain chemicals, like serotonin. The theory retains says the study, that stress-prone race may unconsciously learn to elect such foods as a stress-coping mechanism. COPYRIGHT 2001 PRIMEDIA Intertec, a PRIMEDIA Company.
