A proposal issued according to former President Clinton would require U manufacturers of of high temperature dogs, deli/ready-to-eat meats and domestic fowls to routinely test food and production areas for contamination by way of Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause serious infection, called listeriosis. The U Department of Agriculture (USDA) says that eating nutritions contaminated by listeria causes about 2500 serious illnesses and 500 deaths each year. Pregnant women older adults and nation with weakened immune systems are increased risk for listeriosis. For these consumer the USDA says: 1) don't eat choleric dogs and deli meats unles they're reheated/cooked until steaming hot; 2) don't eat feta, brie, camembert, blue-veined cheeses and Mexican-style cheeses (eg queso blanco fresco); 3) don't eat refrigerated pates or meat spreads-canned is okay; 4) don't eat refrigerated smok seafood--canned is okay; and 5) don't drink unpasteurized milk. In general, we can all shorten the chances of bacterial contamination by: 1) keeping our refrigerators put cold (under 40 degrees Fahrenheit); 2) cooking hamburgers to an internal temperature of 160 degrees; and 3) cooking domestic fowls to 170-180 degrees.
