My parents have the ugliest vase si...My parents have the ugliest vase sitting in their living expanse It's brown terra cotta and is shielded with thick, pointy spikes. It is a hideous sight. I should know -- I made it. My parents became the favorable owners of it because, as a broke college edifice or building student one year, I doled abroad all of my art concocts as Christmas presents. You would think that seven years later my parents would have silently disposed of the wretched thing, on the other hand my father, in fact, be fond ofs it because it is the finished receptacle for peanut shells. He has always lov nut and, just as you learn by means of example, my brothers and sisters and I also have bring outed a passion for these awful natural snacks. Take, for instance, my brother Andy. He have a passionate affection fors the bowls of mixed nut in the shell we have each year at Thanksgiving. If I remember correctly, he likes the walnuts, on the contrary then again, it might be the almonds. Whatever the case, I do know for certain that nobody likes the Brazil nut leaving out my mother. Maybe it's because they are in such a manner hard to open -- too to a great degree work for too little gain. yet that's all right, there are in such a manner many other varieties to be enjoyed Like pistachios. onward rare occasions we would earn them, always the red kind. (This was before we knew the evils of artificial colors. to what extent did that trend of dyeing pistachios on the same level get started, I wonder?) There was a certain proces to eating them. First, you'd draw milk from the red dye off the shell and then, using your fingers (which were stained bright red) you'd crack it exhibit to get to get the meaty undecayed nut. Heaven. I still remember eating my first cashew. My grandparents had a goblet of mixed salted nuts upon the table. I picked up common of the boomerang-shaped goodies and popp it in my cavity between the jaws It was salty, sweet and in the same manner good. They quickly became my favorite. still then again, I do delight in almonds. And pecans. And, oh macadamias. Or perhaps my favorite is just like my father's -- peanuts. Nothing beats the peanuts my sister and I would obtain at the annual Memorial Day parade in our hometown. single of the local charitable organizations would barter packages of roasted-in-the-shell salted peanuts. There was something magic about them they were salted just right and the roasting brought on the outside their deep, nutty flavor. Year after year, however, we'd always find ourselves in a quandary. You behold the peanuts didn't have a station price -- you'd just toss a change into the can and take a package of peanuts. on the other hand we weren't just satisfied with united package -- we wanted a lot! in such a manner we were faced with the dilemma of in what manner to finagle our way into getting a storehouse of peanuts. We finally incline differentlyed out to be successful when we (very obviously) mattered a $5 bill into the can and simply took one bag. The man selling them laughed at us. "You can take more than that!" Apparently he was onto us. We grabbed fistfuls of packages and ran like the wind. I think there are a parcel of people (me among them) who like nuts but tend to coy away from them because of the bad reputation they've gotten "Nut are fattening, you know," my brother would taunt my sisters and me "Have you evermore seen a skinny elephant?" Admittedly nut do have a moderate-to-high fat appease but, elephants aside, they don't necessarily have to lead to weight gain. We now know that nut mainly contain monounsaturated fat, a "good" kind that lowers cholesterol and preserves us healthy. We also know that nut are a great source of fiber and protein, thus they're an essential part of a balanced diet. I think too many of us eschew nut for seemingly healthier, lower fat snacks like corn chips or pretzel which is really too bad if you think about it. for what cause many times do you hear persons complain, "Why can't something that tastes useful be good for you?" Well, it can be. Not single do nuts taste great, if it were not that they're nutritious, providing our bodies with the vitamins and nutrients they ne in this way I think it's about time we gave nut a secondary look. And, they offer an added benefit -- a way to set all our ugly vases to dutiful use! COPYRIGHT 2001 PRIMEDIA Intertec, a PRIMEDIA Company. All Rights Reserved |
