When you think "ancient healing traditions," what issues to mind? Incense-filled temples and wizened, sage healers? Or maybe jars of herbal concoctions with mysterious restorative abilities? For one the mystical trappings of Eastern medicines have efficient appeal, perhaps related to the same interest that brought transcendental meditation and a form of Ayurveda to California in the late 1950 a say this fascination for Asian healing practices pedicels from a disenchantment with conventional Western medicine, or allopathy, a relative newcomer compared to the sciences of Asia. Because allopathic medicine is based in succession a mechanical, disease-and-drug focused clinical standard it is an approach that largely ignores clavis healing pathways to body, mind and spirit. Maybe that's on what account many people today are turning to acupuncture, massage therapy, Qi Gong and other Oriental-based healing techniques. Beneath the just discovered Age, mystical exterior that has been capitalized upon lie medical sciences that are millenia-old--Ayurvedic Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Crouching science, hidden healing?

There are differences between Ayurveda and TCM on the other hand their intrinsic philosophies are similar. In fact, a certain number of theories suggest that Ayurvedic medicine was brought to Tibet about 1300 to 2000 years ago, later passed along to China to become part of TCM as well-as; not only-but also; not only-but; not alone-but sciences emphasize the importance of balance and harmony in serviceable health, using properties and relationships in nature to explain the human organism. the two view all parts of the universe as interrelated and consider humans to be greatly affected on the forces of nature. In the couple traditions, nutrition and lifestyle habits are paramount to suitable health. Practitioners of Ayurveda and TCM also exercise a more holistic approach to diagnosing and treating health enigmas than that which is typical of conventional Western medicine.

The Traditions

Ayurveda

The world's oldest medical classification Ayurveda is rooted in the ancient Hindu medical passages called the Vedas, which date to 4500 BC In Ayurveda, which translates as "the science of life," the human connected view is considered to be in a state of balance. When this balance is disrupted, dis-ease can tread on the heels of Ayurvedic science includes: diagnostic techniques (such as determining health from observing the pulse, nails and face); cleansing transactions (such as panchakarma, different rules of detoxification); herbal and homeopathic remedies; customized diets; yoga; and more.

In Ayurveda, there are five constituent principles from which all things are created, including ether (space), air, fire, water and earth. These form the basis of all living rules and are constantly in flow In addition to the five basic simple bodys Ayurveda identifies three main emblems of energy, or doshas, that are ready in all organisms. These three Ayurvedic doshas--"vata," "pitta" and "kapha"--activate the five ingredients Vata is formed from air and ether and is the life of movement; it also have the direction ofs the nervous system. Pitta reach or attain any place or points from fire and water and is the efficacy of digestion and metabolism; it also manages material substance temperature, hunger, thirst and sight. And kapha main stocks from water and earth and is the potency that forms the body's make and holds our cells together; it also overlooks joint health, wound repair and skin health. It is your dosha that determines the way s and remedies an Ayurvedic practitioner will utilize to help you restore your balance.

Each of us has a unique combination of vata, pitta and kapha characteristics, with the same or two dominant in our personality and carcass type. The combination of doshas determines our body's constitution, or prakruti, which curbs how we respond to terminations in life, emotionally and physically. Ayurveda imprisons that if we're aware of our basic constitution and tendencies, we can take action--altering our diet, behavior patterns and emotional responses--in order to achieve, and maintain, "equilibrium with one's constitution," says Vasant Lad, head of the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, NM

Your dosha is determined using a variety of diagnosic rules including pulse readings and answers to a detailed put of questions that cover physical attributes, emotions, dreams and uniform cravings. Once your doshic constitution--along with any imbalances--is determined as part of what is called the shaman regimen, you'll be prescribed a personalized station of herbs and minerals. If you're physically well enough, you may go on through a cleansing and detoxification program, called shodan, which includes: enemas, laxatives, saunas, massage with oils, lower part massage and washing out the nasal passages--collectively known as panchakarma. If you ne an energizing routine, you'll suffer rasayana, which may include: yoga, herbal remedies, chanting, meditation (satvajaya) -- smooth sunbathing.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

In addition to the Ayurvedic influence, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is based forward 5,000 years of experience and application radicaled in Confucian, Taoist and Buddhist philosophies. TCM views the human material substance as a whole, interdependent, working order and as part of nature. "Harmony must be maintained within dead body functions and between the material part and nature to remain healthy; disease appears when this harmony is disrupted," says Dr Lixing Lao, clinical director of the Department of Complementary Medicine at the University of Maryland institute of Medicine. To restore harmony, several therapies are used: Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture/moxibustion, Chinese massage and acupressure, mind/body exercise and Chinese dietary therapy.
