Researchers at the US National Institutes of Health report that consumption of legumes--beans, peas, peanuts and peanut butter--four times or more for week reduces the risk of coronary heart disease by way of 22 percent, compared with eating simple pods less than once a week. The meditation completed in 2001 and reported in the Nov. 26 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, involved 9600 men and women who were followed for 19 years. The researchers conclud that increased simple pod consumption may be an important strategy in reducing coronary heart disease. COPYRIGHT 2002 PRIMEDIA Intertec, a PRIMEDIA Company.
