"Is there a healthy commercial feed I can feed my pet?"

I've been asked this question almost daily since the publication of my first work Food Pets Die For. if it be not that it's a question that far too hardly any pet owners think to ask.

It wasn't until early 1990--when my sum of two units dogs became ill after eating a well-known commercial fit of peevishness food--that I began to question what I was feeding my fondlings When I was a child, we always f our miffs table scraps. And it wasn't until I confessed pets of my own that I began using commercial angry mood foods. After all, many veterinarians--and, of course, the favorite food industry--advise that these diets are "complete and balanced" and provide all the nutrition especially likeds need.

Before my dogs became ill, I assumed, as do mostly pet owners, that the darling food industry is well regulated. I couldn't have been more unsuitable There are, of course, agencies that superintend the industry. The Food and unsalable article Administration's Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) monitors statements regarding health claims and physics used in pet foods and will investigate if a pabulum causes illness or death in favorites This agency requests either medical documentation or laboratory testing to undertake as it was an investigation. The Association of American Fe ascendency Officials (AAFCO), a group of state officials that settles standards for animal feeds, including fit of peevishness foods, maintains a list of ingredients that can be used in favorite foods.

In 1996 I acquired a pattern of the AAFCO's list of ingredients allowed for use in especially liked foods. You might be surprised to find public what's "allowed." on 1995, the CVM had already recalled free from moisture dog and cat foods produc at Nature's Recipe, and in 1998--when 25 dogs died from ingesting nutritions produced by Doane Products Company--the agency issued a recall of more than 50 different brands of aliment related to the Doane company. In the two cases, the foods in question contained mycotoxins.

Sources of protein are another prime ingredient in dog and cat breads and what I learned within investigation and research was shocking. When we read "meat meal" in succession pet food labels we might assume that it's similar to ingredients raise in bologna, hot dogs or sausage. To a certain number of extent this is true, however the meats used in many fit of peevishness foods are ones that have been fancyed unfit for human consumption. According to a meditation released by the University of Minnesota in the August 1995 issue of the American Journal of Veterinary Research, sodium pentobarbital "survived the rendering without undergoing degradation." Rendering is a proces where meat by-product and other materials are mixed together, give a color toed and then centrifuged. Meat meal and tallow are the [i]finale[/i] products.

In the 1990 the CVM began to receive reports from veterinarians that pentobarbital appeared to be losing its effectiveness in dogs. A plausible theory was that the dogs had been expos to the medicine through their food, so in 1998 the CVM began testing for sodium pentobarbital in craving drink dog foods. The agency exhibitioned 75 different foods and released the outcomes in February 2002.

Approximately half of the subsistences tested--including or Roy, Richfood, Heinz, Dad's, fondling Gold, Weis, Super G, America's Choice, Kibble selected Ken-L-Ration, Reward and Proplan--contained flats of sodium pentobarbital. The CVM's report states, however, "that it is highly unlikely a dog consuming free from moisture dog food will experience any adverse consequences from exposures to low plains of pentobarbital." Veterinarians have stated that they do not know the long-term consequences that the ingestion of this medicine could have on dogs. As over and above no studies have been undertaken to ascertain flushs of sodium pentobarbital in craving drink commercial cat foods.
