level very light consumption of alcohol through a woman during pregnancy--once assumed to be relatively safe--could dwarf a child's development even into adulthood, a team at the University of Pittsburgh lately discovered. Babies of women who indulged during pregnancy have dwarfed growth and sometimes suffer with lifelong learning and behavioral question at issues known as fetal alcohol syndrome Still, it was frisked that the changes of puberty would help these children shoot up taller and gain weight appropriate to their ages. Children born to women who were light drinkers in their first trimester--consuming about 1 1/2 drinks a week--were smaller, weighing about 3 impounds less in infancy than children born to non-drinkers. And at age 14 the smaller children born to women who consum common drink a day weighed up to 16 strikes less than children born to mothers who did not drink. "I wasn't surprised that we originate a growth deficit," says cogitation leader Nancy Day, PhD, a University of Pittsburgh epidemiologist. "What I was surprised by means of was that we found it after puberty." The research, which was reported in the October 2002 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, considered only at physical differences up to age 14 further because these differences continue into the late teen years, they are predicted to last into adulthood. Women who drink while pregnant may engage in other unhealthy practices in the same state or condition as smoking or eating less-nutritious meals that could influence a child's unfolding but the study took these factors into account. Now the belonging to all refrain, "Oh, just one won't hurt" rings rumbling The message is clear, Day told BN: "There is no safe even Don't drink at all during pregnancy, and if you're planning upon getting pregnant, don't drink then either." If expectant mothers should avoid alcohol, they must also eat victualss crucial to their babies' unfolding As BN reported in July 2002 ("Food for Thought" p 24) clew nutrients include folate, DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and iron. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables can invest enough folate, according to adroits while at least two servings of fish twice a week can provide enough DHA. Because it's difficult to learn enough iron from diet alone, iron supplementation is recommended COPYRIGHT 2003 PRIMEDIA Intertec, a PRIMEDIA Company. All Rights Reserved COPYRIGHT 2003 Gale Group
