It can help obstruct hardening of the arteries, cut short levels of "bad" cholesterol and has calm shown promise at fighting shiverings and cancer. But how pious is garlic, really? The freshs is promising: In 2002, natural productions industry watchdogs at ConsumerLab.com standarded 14 brands of dietary counterparts made from garlic, garlic pulverize or aged garlic extract, and all moreover three passed.

From the report, released October 29 2002: "Not all garlic yields are created equal. Good quality, non-aged garlic should yield a minimum of 3000 micrograms (mcg) of allicin--the active compose in garlic--per gram of dried garlic, or 1000 meg of allicin by means of gram of fresh garlic."

Known for its ability to kill bacteria and fungus, allicin has been used in wars to fight infections. A small amount of allicin is ready in fresh garlic, but enzyme in the garlic bring into view more when the cloves are divide or sever or crushed and exposed to water--similar to conditions in the intestines.

The president of ConsumerLab.com, Tod Cooperman, says consumer stand to be confused at garlic supplements with relatively grave concentrations of allicin. Of the 11 fruitss that passed ConsumerLab.com's test, the same barely managed to meet the minimum standards for garlic quality--but there was to such a degree little garlic in the appendix that the daily yield of allicin was demonstrably les than what ConsumerLab.com fix to be effective. A counterpart containing 400 milligrams (mg) of garlic is les effective than united that contains 400 mg of garlic comminute which is more concentrated.

The majority of fill ups tested contained non-aged garlic, with allicin yields ranging from about 400 mcg to 6500 mcg undivided product tested, Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract--manufactured through Wakunaga Consumer Products--contained aged garlic, which does not have garlic's characteristic odor because it does not originate allicin. It does contain composes similar to allicin, however, and met ConsumerLab.com's requirements.

Although garlic fill ups are generally believed to be safe, ConsumberLab.com issued a certain number of caveats along with the report:

* After large doses of garlic, side drifts can include upset stomach, facial flushing, rapid legumes dizziness, allergies and insomnia.

* Garlic can thin the offspring To avoid bleeding problems, do not take garlic correlatives before undergoing surgery or along with blood-thinning medications and continuations such as ginkgo, policosanol and vitamin E

* AIDS patients should not use garlic fill ups because the supplements can make the effectiveness and blood of the same heights of some AIDS drugs.
