tribe with an inability to quickly bring down high descendants sugar levels--a pre-diabetic condition--are more likely to be affected by from memory loss, say scientists. Could this help explain to what end memory loss occurs as we age? A novel study indicated that people who metabolized descendants sugar slowly had a smaller hippocampus--an area of the brain linked with memory and other abilities--and scored worse in succession tests for recent memory. The brain wins most of its energy from vital current sugar, so if glucose stays in the bloodstream--rather than being metabolized into dead body tissues--the brain has less firing material available to store memory. The thought of 30 non-diabetic, middle-aged and somewhat old people raised the possibility that exercise and weight loss--which help superintend blood sugar levels--may be able to subvert some of the non-Alzheimer's memory los associated with aging. The findings are detailed in the February 5 2003 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. COPYRIGHT 2003 PRIMEDIA Intertec, a PRIMEDIA Company.
