Scientists are using antimicrobial extracts from the herb basil to bring to maturity a plastic wrap for meats and cheeses that will better patronize them from contamination. Basil's extracts reach out foods' shelf life by killing opposite to bacteria such as E. coli and listeria, which can cause victuals poisoning. Tests indicate that the basil wrap can hold fast bacteria away from Cheddar cheese for a week longer than traditional packaging. pair chemicals from basil--an ether called methyl chavicol and the alcohol linalool--are used in the wrap. The pay with an abatements are active against eight different models of bacteria. We wonder: Will they use it to package basil? COPYRIGHT 2003 PRIMEDIA Intertec, a PRIMEDIA Company.
