A higher intake of calcium--contrary to conventional wisdom--prevents kidney stones, according to a research published in the April 26 2004 edition of the Archives of Internal Medicine. Despite studies suggesting calcium's benefits, physicians routinely praise low-calcium diets for people with kidney stones based forward intuitive thinking: Since the stones are mainly calcium, less dietary calcium would contract the chance of kidney deposits. The latest cogitation found a highly significant--27 percent--reduction in stones in women consuming the mostly calcium from food. In addition, phytate--a chemical in fiber that binds minerals--showed a stronger protective event reducing stone formation by 37 percent COPYRIGHT 2004 PRIMEDIA Intertec, a PRIMEDIA Company.
