For years, I tried prescription ant...For years, I tried prescription antidepressants--more than a dozen in all. If I could single find the right medicine, I cogitation my life would change. The heaviness would lift. The emptiness would be filled. The ecstasy of living would return. For nearly a decade, I desperately gazeed for a magic bullet. Each pill numbed the emptiness in varying stages and each had its confess special side effects--from the absolutely annoying dry throat and bewildered head to horrendous jitters, nausea and los of sexual desire. unless hey, better than depression--right? The side meanings were socially acceptable. Even complaining about them was a bonding mechanism with PTA mom and co-workers alike. However, admitting to overwhelming sadness and hopelessnes is about as socially acceptable as an interpret mouth sore. I learned to continue my depression to myself. unruffled so, when I was 38 I decided to clean disclosed my medicine cabinet--cold turkey. The catalyst was an emotionally devastating hysterectomy that readyed a period of deep grieving. It's not that I wanted more children; my pain, in a nutshell, was about losing an important piece of my identity. It was to a great degree worse than the mild malaise I usually felt and I knew it must be a plea from my material substance and soul that I had to heed. After my hysterectomy, I felt that I couldn't fare back to medicating my emptiness and being an emotional zombie. I in some way sensed that if I could be warmed this depth of pain, I could also have feeling a greater depth of ease So I decided to make progress off antidepressants for good and honestly listen to my overwhelming sadness--what it was telling me about my life--instead of numbing it. In the five years since then, I've been onward an empowering journey. I've discovered loving ways to gently bring face to face and release my depression and to make play for joy, hope and peace. The pursuit itself has been a healing salve. I started with small degrees like writing in a journal first thing in the morning to intercourse with my soul. It helped. I construct that when I wrote down the worries and fears that serve to run around in my mind like caged gerbils in succession an exercise wheel, I could expect at them more objectively. And insights would pour on the outside on the page that I didn't smooth realize were there. Slowly I began to consciously focus forward the positive--some days more favorably than others. I got in the habit of taking a value periodically throughout the day to proffer a silent prayer of thanks for all of life's little pleasures. I establish much to be thankful for--from the warm light on my skin to a favorite ballad on the radio to sharing a laugh with my couple sons. Gratitude is a marvellous antidote for negativity, but sometimes it's difficult to descry the light of appreciation from one side the murky shadows of depression. Just during the past scarcely any years, I've started carrying a small "gratitude notepad" in my purse forward those days when my mind is having badger hanging on to the little gifts that each day brings, I jot those gifts down. It helps. As I started using inner reflection to reaper into the positive, it became easier to gently push aside all of the negative debris that had built up through the years and fueled my I liked to what degree this new way of being felt and I wanted more. I used the one and the other psychotherapy and meditation to cogitate on what I really wanted from life. As the answers came, I discovered that my depression stemm from not honoring my authentic desires and from seeking approval from others at the outlay of my soul. Mine is a journey in progress--most frequently it's two steps forward and common step back. I've tried acupuncture, biofeedback, psychotherapy, meditation, power work, neurofeedback, more psychotherapy, homeopathy, various forms of emotion-release massage and steady more psychotherapy--with varying degrees of succes I adopted the view that whatever didn't harm me just might help, and sometimes, miraculously, it did. The lock opener to my success in coping with depression without medication has been my trial-and-error approach. I've gradually perform the operations indicated ined a toolbox of remedies that work for me I don't know with what intent but they do. However, this is a personal journey: What works for me may surpassingly well not work for someone other I believe it's the proces of finding ways to really listen to what the sadness and pain are saying--and then acknowledging of the present day information as it comes along--that is healing. This was my point in dispute with taking medication: It simply masked my pain; it didn't help me to better understand where it came from or in what way to honor it. Did I make about investments that didn't pay off? You bet. There's the time I invested three days and thousands of dollars in a self-improvement seminar that just didn't resonate with me Neurofeedback (a learning strategy that enables the public to alter their brain waves) was frustrating because the terminates were unpredictable: Sometimes the electrode that manipulated my brain waves were calming, and sometimes they gave me a migraine.
