Four major insurers announced merger plans during the latter part of 2003 that will create sum of two units of the largest entities across the industry.

In October 2003 WellPoint Health Networks Inc., based in Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Indianapolis-based Anthem Inc. announced in a transaction worth $164 billion that they would be lost to create the largest U insurer, based forward membership.
